Elections in India in 2022 will include election to the office of the President of India, vice president of India, by-elections to the Lok Sabha, elections to the Rajya Sabha, elections to state legislative assemblies of 7 (seven) states, by-elections to state legislative assemblies and numerous other elections and by-elections to state legislative councils and local bodies.[1]
Presidential election[edit]
The 2022 Indian presidential election will be the 17th presidential election to be held in India. Ram Nath Kovind is expected to be the incumbent president at the time of the election. Article 56(1) of the Constitution of India provides that the President of India shall remain in office for a period of five years. Consequent to the expiry of the term of President Kovind, an election to fill in the office is expected to be scheduled.
As of April 2021, the following people have been subjects of discussion in media about their potential candidacy for Presidency.
National Democratic Alliance
- Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar (2015–present)[2]
- Capt. Amarinder Singh, Former Chief Minister of Punjab (2002–2007; 2017–2021)[2]
United Progressive Alliance
- Karan Singh, Governor of Jammu and Kashmir (1965–1967)[3]
- Sharad Pawar, Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra (2014–present).[2]
Third Front
- Mayawati, Former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (1993–1996; 1998–2000; 2007–2012)[2]

- Bhim Singh, President of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (2021–present).[4]
Vice presidential elections[edit]
Article 56(1) of the Constitution of India provides that the Vice President of India shall remain in office for a period of five years. Consequent to the expiry of the term of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, an election to fill the office is expected to be scheduled in August 2022.[5]
