The Central Prison, Ambala, is situated near the Civil Lines area in Ambala City. It covers an area of more than 50 acres in total and has an authorized capacity of 1,228 prisoners.[1] The prison is known for its radio station pilot program, which was launched early in 2021.[2][3]

History[edit]

The prison was erected by the Government in 1872 as a Sub Jail. It was extended into a District Jail in 1930 and became Ambala Central Jail in 1947.[4] In 1949 Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, was executed here by hanging.[5]
