The Deputy Chief Minister of Kerala is the deputy to the Chief Minister of Kerala, who is head of the government of Kerala. The deputy chief minister is the second highest ranking member of the Kerala Council of Ministers. A deputy chief minister usually also holds a powerful cabinet portfolio such as the home minister, or finance minister. The position of deputy chief minister is used to bring political stability and strength within a coalition government or when a proper chain of command is necessary.
The office has since been occupied only thrice, having been occupied for a few years out of the 61 years since its inception. The first Deputy Chief Minister of Kerala was R. Sankar, who was also minister for finance in Pattom Thanu Pillai Ministry.[1] The third and last deputy chief minister was K. Avukader Kutty Naha, who took on the role from 1983 to 1987 in K. Karunakaran's government after demise of fellow partyman C. H. Mohammed Koya. The current government does not have a Deputy Chief Minister.
