Ongole district was created in 1970 with three revenue divisions of Kurnool, Guntur and Nellore districts. In 1972, it was renamed Prakasam district in memory of [[Tanguturi Prakasam]], freedom fighter, chief Minister of undivided Madras state and the first chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.
