History

It was established in the 1970s specifically to home dual-power locos. It holds more than 50 WAG 5 class locomotives.

It was an AC electric trip shed to house locos coming from other sheds and an AC/DC dual loco trip shed which houses WCAM class locomotives from Valsad shed and which allows locomotive changes at Vadodara because the trains which were coming from New Delhi mainline are AC Locomotives and the trains going to Mumbai need AC/DC Loco.

Post AC conversion of Western Railway, WCAM-1 & WCAM-2/2P fleet transferred to Central Railway's Kalyan Loco Shed. WCAM-1 was gradually condemned and are out of service totally.

Operations

Being one of the two electric engine sheds in Western Railway, various major and minor maintenance schedules of electric locomotives are carried out here. It has the sanctioned capacity of 150 engine units. This shed houses a total of 205 engine units, including 66 WAP-5, 139 WAP-7.[1] Electric loco Shed, Vadodara is now housing the 2nd largest fleet of WAP-5 in Indian Railways and it caters to many long-distance electric trains.[2][3]

Like all locomotive sheds, BRC does regular maintenance, overhaul and repair including painting and washing of locomotives. It not only attends to locomotives housed at BRC but to ones coming in from other sheds as well. It has four pit lines for loco repair. Locomotives of Vadodara ELS along with Valsad ELS were the regular links for all trains running through Gujarat and Maharashtra when widespread electrification of railway lines started in Western Railways. It handled prestigious trains like the August Kranti Rajdhani Express, and the Gujarat Mail . BRC locomotives used to be predominantly the regular links for trains traveling to east as well.
