Electric Loco Shed, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar is a motive power depot performing locomotive maintenance and repair facility for electric locomotives of the Indian Railways, located at Mughalsarai of the East Central Railway zone in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is one of the three electric loco sheds in the ECR the others being at Barauni (BJU) and Gomoh (GMO). As of June 2022 there are 183 locomotives in the Shed.

History[edit]

After Eastern Railway (now under East Central Railways) set a deadline to eliminate all steam locomotive operations by 1990, a push was given towards establishing electric locomotion as the primary motive power, and the Steam locomotive sheds were decommissioned.[1] To meet the needs of exponentially increasing rail traffic on the new continuous broad gauge lines from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to rest of India with the completion of gauge conversion, the Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar (Mughalsarai) was selected by Indian railways for a new electric locomotive shed.[2] The shed started it's operations in 1969 with a planned allotment of 45 WAG-2 locomotives. The high speed coaching locomotives were introduced in 1993.[3]

Operations[edit]

Being one of the three electric engine sheds in East Central Railway, various major and minor maintenance schedules of electric locomotives are carried out here. It has the sanctioned capacity of 150 engine units. Beyond the operating capacity, this shed houses a total of 183 engine units, including 57 WAG-9, 51 WAP-4 and 75 WAG-7. It also formerly housed a few WAM-4 locomotives.[4] Electric loco Shed, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar (Mughalsarai) is now housing a large fleet of WAG-7 in Indian Railways and it caters to many long-distance freight electric trains.[5][6]

Like all locomotive sheds, DDU does regular maintenance, overhaul and repair including painting and washing of locomotives. It not only attends to locomotives housed at DDU but to ones coming in from other sheds as well. It has four pit lines for loco repair. Locomotives of Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya ELS along with Gomoh ELS and Barauni ELS were the regular links for all trains running through Uttar Pradesh and Bihar when widespread electrification of railway lines started in East Central Railways. DDU locomotives used to be predominantly the regular links for trains traveling to south as well. It handled prestigious trains like Swarnarekha express, Shramjeevi Superfast Express, Palamu Express and many more link express trains and superfast trains.

Livery and Markings[edit]

DDU ELS has its own markings on the locomotives. The shed mainly uses stencil marks which is present on loco's front and back body. DDU based locomotives have a standardised livery all over India.
