Electric Loco Shed, Santragachi is a motive power depot performing locomotive maintenance and repair facility for electric locomotives of the Indian Railways, located at Santragachhi of the South Eastern Railway zone in West Bengal, India. It is one of the five electric loco sheds in SER others being at Bondamunda (BNDM), Bokaro Steel City (BKSC), Rourkela (ROU) and Tatanagar (TATA).

History[edit]

After South Eastern Railway set a deadline to eliminate all steam locomotive operations by 1990, a push was given towards establishing electric locomotion as the primary motive power, and the steam locomotive sheds were decommissioned.[1] To meet the needs of exponentially increasing rail traffic on the new continuous broad-gauge lines from West Bengal and Jharkhand to rest of India the Santragachi was selected by Indian Railways for a new electric locomotive shed.[2]

In the late 1999 the SRC ELS started its operations with 6 WAP-4. The new locomotive class WAP-7 were introduced on 13 November 2017.[3]

Operations[edit]

Being one of the three electric engine sheds in South Eastern Railway, various major and minor maintenance schedules of electric locomotives are carried out here. It has the sanctioned capacity of 50 engine units. Beyond the operating capacity, this shed houses a total of 120 engine units including 60 WAP-4, 54 WAP-7, 6 WDG-4 and 10 WDS-6 units.[4] Electric loco Shed, Santragachi is now housing a large fleet of WAP-4 in Indian Railways and it caters to many long-distance electric trains.[5][6]

Like all locomotive sheds, SRC does regular maintenance, overhaul and repair including painting and washing of locomotives. It not only attends to locomotives housed at SRC but to ones coming in from other sheds as well. It has four pit lines for loco repair. Locomotives of Santragachi ELS along with Tatanagar ELS were the regular links for all trains running through West Bengal and Jharkhand when widespread electrification of railway lines started in South Eastern Railways. It handled prestigious trains like Aranyak Express, Coromandel Express, Rupashi Bangla Express and many more.

Livery and Markings[edit]

SRC has its own markings on the locomotives. The Shed mainly uses stencil marks which are present on loco's front and back body. SRC based WAP-4 can be identified by their cherry red colour. Other locomotives of SRC have a standardised livery all over India.
