Howrah metro station is a station of Kolkata Metro's Line 2 or East West Metro in Howrah. It will connect to the mainline Indian Railways Howrah Railway Station.[2] The connections between the mainline and metro stations will allow seamless transfer without checking out of the station complex.[citation needed] After completion it will become the deepest metro station in India.[3] It connects to Mahakaran station in Kolkata through the India's first under-river metro tunnel beneath the Hooghly river.
History
The master plan of East West corridor had already thought back in 1971. The East West Metro corridor, was planned to connect Howrah Railway Station with the Salt Lake region. As per the feasibility investigation for the corridor conducted by Pacific Consultant International Group in January 2004; their plan report proposed the route and tubular structures to be beneath the Hooghly River.
Tthe Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRC) was formed, to execute the operations of this line.
Connections
The Howrah metro station is well connected to the adjacent areas via different means. The adjacent connecting metro stations will be Howrah Maidan to the west and Mahakaran to the east. The station is expected to open in 2021.[4]
The station will be one of the biggest metro stations of India, built to accommodate a estimated six lakhs passengers per day, making it one of the busiest in the nation.
Train
The Eastern Railway runs EMU services from Howrah Junction railway station towards Bardhaman, Bandel, Sheoraphuli, Serampore Belur Math, Tarakeswar, Arambagh, Goghat, Katwa and various other intermediate stations of Main Line, Chord line and Tarakeswar route) on a highly frequent basis. Also a large number of trains towards Central, Northern and North-Eastern India.
Also the South Eastern Railway, operates local trains from Howrah Junction towards Kharagpur, Medinipur, Amta, Mecheda, Panskura, Haldia and various other intermediate stations on a frequent basis. High number of trains towards Central, Western, East coast and Southern India are also available.
Bus
Highly frequent bus services towards various parts of Kolkata, Airport, Bidhannagar, Salt lake, Newtown, Rajarhat, Howrah, Bally, Belur, Shibpur etc are available of government (WBTC) and private bus owners.
Cab services
On demand cab services are available with Ola, Uber and yellow taxi cabs. Prepaid taxis are also available.
Auto rickshaw
Auto rickshaws are available from Howrah station towards Howrah maidan, bally, belur, liluah.
