East Champaran district or Purvi Champaran district is an administrative district in the Tirhut division of the state of Bihar in India. The district headquarters is located at Motihari. Prior to 1971, there was a single Champaran district. On 1 December 1971, it was divided into East and West Champaran districts.

About district[edit | edit source]

East Champaran district is situated in northern Bihar and forms part of the Tirhut division. The district headquarters is at Motihari. It shares an international boundary with Nepal to the north and is bordered by Sitamarhi district, Sheohar district, Muzaffarpur district, Gopalganj district and West Champaran district.

The district occupies an area of 3,968 km2 (1,532 sq mi) and had a population of 5,099,371 according to the 2011 Census.[5]

Geography[edit | edit source]

The East Champaran district occupies an area of 3,968 square kilometres (1,532 sq mi).[6]

Gandak, Burhi Gandak and Bagmati are important rivers flowing through or along the region.

Mehsi and regional connectivity[edit | edit source]

Mehsi is an important urban and transport centre in the southern part of East Champaran district. The town is situated on National Highway 27, forming part of the Kotwa (Motihari)–Mehsi–Muzaffarpur highway corridor. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) records the Kotwa (Motihari)–Mehsi–Muzaffarpur section as an 80-kilometre section of NH 27, formerly part of NH 28.[7]

Mehsi is connected to the wider transport network of northern Bihar by road and rail. Mehsi railway station is situated on the Barauni–Gorakhpur line, providing rail connectivity towards Muzaffarpur and Motihari and other regional centres.

The combination of national-highway and railway connectivity gives Mehsi an important position within the regional transport network of East Champaran and northern Bihar.[7]

According to the Census of India, Mehsi was recorded as an urban town (Mehsi Nagar Panchayat/NP) in the 2011 Census, while Mehsi was also recorded as a community development block. The Census records separate urban and rural demographic and amenities data for the Mehsi area.[8]

Transport[edit | edit source]

East Champaran is served by a network of national highways, other roads and railways. NH 27 is an important east–west highway through the district and connects the Motihari area with Mehsi and Muzaffarpur.[7]

Mehsi forms an important point on the Kotwa–Mehsi–Muzaffarpur road corridor. Its railway station on the Barauni–Gorakhpur line provides an additional regional transport connection.
