Mehsi (/ˈmeɪhsi/; pronunciation: Mayh-see)[14] is a town and a notified area[15] in the East Champaran district in the Indian state of Bihar[16]. It is situated in the Tirhut division and lies in the plains of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Mehsi is part of the 3. Purvi Champaran. Situated at the border of Sheohar district, Muzaffarpur district.[17] and Mehsi is the largest fruit business hub in North Bihar and pearl Button business place in Mehsi which is famous all over the world.[18] Mehsi is historically regarded as the "Gateway of Champaran", serving as an important entry point into the Champaran region from Muzaffarpur.[19] The town holds significance in the Indian independence movement. On 15 April 1917, Mahatma Gandhi arrived in Champaran for the Champaran Satyagraha and received a public welcome at Mehsi railway station before proceeding towards Motihari.[20] Mehsi is also known for its pearl button industry, which began in 1905 when oyster shell-based button production was initiated locally. The industry expanded significantly during the early 20th century and contributed to the regional economy.[21].

Mehsi has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cwa) with hot summers, a monsoon season, and cool winters. Summers are typically hot and humid, while winters are relatively cool and dry. Temperatures can reach above 42 °C (108 °F) in summer, while winter temperatures may drop close to 1 °C (34 °F).

Mehsi is known for its local trade and agricultural activities. The town has historically been associated with fruit trading and the pearl button industry, which contributed to the local economy. Small markets and retail shops serve nearby villages and rural areas.[18]

Mehsi is located at 26°21′28″N 85°06′48″E / 26.357696°N 85.1133°E It is situated at the bank of Budhi Gandak river, about 41 km Southeast from Motihari town (District headquarter), at the border of East Champaran districts and Muzaffarpur district.

Demographics[edit | edit source]
According to the 2011 Census of India, Mehsi had a population of about 25,995. The town consists of people from different cultural and religious communities. Methil, Hindi and Urdu are commonly spoken languages in the region.
River[edit | edit source]
The perennial Budhi Gandak river flows near the town of Mehsi[24] which is a tributary of the Ganga river.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Railways[edit | edit source]
Mehsi town, through railway, is directly connected to the major Indian cities like – Patna, Varanasi, Haridwar, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Allahabad, Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, Amritsar, Guwahati, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Ranchi, Raipur, Nagpur, Hyderabad etc. Mehsi railway station is situated on Muzaffarpur–Gorakhpur main line under the Samastipur railway division of East Central Railway zone.[25] It is also the closest railway station to Kesaria stupa, a Buddhist pilgrimage site, and is on Muzaffarpur–Gorakhpur main line under the Samastipur railway division.[26][27]

The nearest airport is Darbhanga Airport.[17] and Patna Airport.

Road[edit | edit source]
India's 2nd Longest National Highway, NH-27, passes through Mehsi.
- Buses have been introduced by the BSTDC between Patna and Motihari, Bettiah, Raxaul, Bairgania, Sheohar via Mehsi.[28]
- A special caravan service called Wonder on Wheel, between Patna and Kesariya, Mehsi, has been introduced by the Bihar Tourism Department.[29]
- Mehsi has restricted the use of auto rickshaws, cars, and buses to make the site more peaceful. A permit is required to use cars or buses, and the only taxi available is an electric rickshaw that is mostly noiseless.
