Kittappa of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam served as member for the Mayiladuthurai legislative constituency for four consecutive terms from 1967 to 1984.[2][3][4][5] The Indian National Congress has won the seat four times (1957,[6] 1962,[7] 1991[8] and 2006[9]), the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, five times (1967,[2] 1971,[3] 1977,[4] 1980,[5] 1989); the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam,[10] Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar)[11] and the Bharatiya Janata Party,[12] once each.
