Samthar State was an 11-gun-salute princely state in India during the British Raj, ruled by the Khatana Dynasty. The state was administered as part of the Bundelkhand Agency within Central India. Its capital was the town of Samthar, also known as Shamshergarh, situated on the level plains of the Bundelkhand region, between the Pahuj and Betwa rivers.[1][2][3]

Samthar Fort

Samthar Fort, historically known as Shamshergarh, is a striking 16th-century fortress located in Samthar, in the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh. It is renowned for its remarkable architectural style, which uniquely combines traditional Bundelkhandi design with French and other European influences. Unlike many publicly accessible archaeological monuments, the fort served as the historic seat of the independent, 11-gun-salute princely Samthar State. It remains a privately owned heritage residence inhabited by the royal family to this day.[4]
