Kandukur or Kandukuru is a town(Urban area) in Nellore district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipality and the headquarters of Kandukur mandal, Nellore district as well as Kandukur revenue division(KRD) which comprises 23 mandals.[2]

History[edit]

Nellore district formed part of the composite Madras State till 1 October 1953. On 1 November 1956 when the states were reorganized on a linguistic basis, this district came under the Andhra Pradesh State.[3]

In 1970 Prakasam district was formed from parts of Guntur, Kurnool, and Nellore districts.[4]

Tirupati District formed from a part of old Chittoor district and a part from old Nellore district on 4 April 2022.[5]

The name of Nellore district has been changed as Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore District on 4 June 2008.[3]

Geography[edit]

Kandukuru (earlier known as Skandapuri) is located at 15°12′59″N 79°54′15″E / 15.2165°N 79.9042°E / 15.2165; 79.9042.[6] It has an average elevation of 13 metres (43 ft).[7]

Demography[edit]

As of 2017 India census,[8] Kandukur had a population of 1,54,000. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Kandukur has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 55%. In Kandukuru, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Education[edit]

The primary and secondary school education is imparted by government, aided and private schools, under the School Education Department of the state.[9][10]

Institutions[edit]

Central Tobacco Research Institution - Research Station. In 1977, Central Tobacco Research Institution established a research station at Kandukur, Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh state to conduct research on flue-cured virginia tobacco grown in Southern Light Soils(SLS) of Andhra Pradesh. The research station has 42.2 ha of land with good infrasturctural facilities to conduct research on crop improvement, crop production and crop protection. Out of 1,10,000 ha under FCV tobacco in Andhra Pradesh, the area in Prakasam and Nellore districts is about 75,000 ha with about 60% under SLS and rest under Southern Black Soils (SBS).
