Habra is a city in the Barasat Sadar subdivision of the North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

History[edit]

In 1947, India won independence that saw not only the end of the British Raj but also the partition of India, that brought about a big change in India’s borders. In eastern India, "millions of refugees poured in from erstwhile East Pakistan."[1] and many refugees settled in what is now Habra. In 1979, Habra municipality was set up with the Habra, Kamarthuba, Joygachi, Hatthuba, Kamarthuba, Ashrafabad Hijalpukur, Nagarthuba, Haria and Akrampur mouzas.[2]

Geography[edit]

Habra municipality covers an area of 21.82 sq km.[2]

The district is a part of the Ganges Delta, the largest delta in the world.[3][4] This area is considered to be very fertile for crop production.[3]

Demographics[edit]

According to the 2011 census, Habra municipality had a population of 147,221, of which males were 74,592 and females were 74,592.[5]

Habra had a total literacy rate of 89.96%.[5]

Habra Urban Agglomeration had a population of 299,782.[6]

Habra UA includes Habra municipality, Ashoknagar Kalyangarh municipality, Anarberia (census town), Bara Bamonia (CT), Guma (CT), and Khorddabamonia (CT).[6]

Economy[edit]

Habra Bazar is an active business centre, which is said to be the largest business hub in the state after Burrabazar. It supplies rice, milk, green vegetables, chicken, jewelry, garments and jute to Kolkata and other places.[7]

Transport[edit]

Habra railway station, on the Sealdah–Bangaon line, is about 45 km from Sealdah railway station.[7]

Habra is on Jessore Road. At present the Shyambazar to Barasat sector is NH 12 and the Barasat to Petrapole sector is NH 112. The old numbering was NH 34.[7][8][9]

  • Hatthuba Adarsha Bidyapith, established in 1951, is a Bengali-medium, coeducational institution, having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library for 2,341 books and 10 computers for teaching and learning purposes. The school providesmid-day meals.[15]
  • Jaigachi Shyama Prasad Bidyayatan, established in 1952, is a Bengali-medium, coeducational institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground, a library with 1,200 books and has 10 computers for teaching and learning purposes. The school provides mid-day meals.[16]
  • Habra Girls’ High School, established in 1954, is a Bengali-medium, girls only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground and a library with 500 books. The school provides mid-day meals.[17]
  • Saptapalli Deshbandhu Balika Vidyalaya, established in 1956, is a Bengali medium, girls only institutiom having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library with 2,000 books. The school provides mid-day meals.[18]
  • Prafulla Nagar Vidyamandir, established in 1958, is a Bengali medium, boys only institution, having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground, a library with 4,300 books and has 10 computers for teaching and learning purposes. The school provides mid-day meals.[19]
  • Habra Model High School, established in 1962, is a Bengali medium, boys only institution, having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground and a library with 2,750 books. The school provides mid-day meals.[20]
  • Habra Kamini Kumar Girls’ High School, established in 1963, is a Bengali medium, girls only institution having facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a playground, a library with 8,350 books, and 25 computers. The school has a computer aided learning lab. It provides mid-day meals.[21]
  • Purbanchal High School, established in 1964, is a Bengali medium, coeducational institution with facilities for teaching from class V to class XII. It has a library with 486 books and has 10 computers for teaching and learning purposes. The school provides mid-day meals.[22]
  • St.Stephen’s School, established in 2001, is an English medium, coeducational institution having facilities for teaching from class I to class XII. It has a playground, a library with 1,000 books and 25 computers. It has a computer-aided learning lab.[23]

Culture[edit]

Banipur Lok Utsav is a big fair organised in February for about a week.[7]

Healthcare[edit]

Habra State General Hos pital has 131 beds.[24]
