East Indian Railway was setup in 1845 as East Indian Railway Company and was later renamed as East Indian Railway (EIR). It was the first company to introduce railways in eastern India. It was a private company initially launched with European capital and management. The line from Howrah to Raniganj (194.73 km) in Raniganj Coalfield was its experimental venture.[1]In order to secure the lucrative coal transportation, EIR laid the line up to Raniganj in 1955. It was extended up to Asansol in 1863. It ultimately became Grand Chord, now a part of the Howrah–Gaya–Delhi line.[2]
EIR came under the control of the Government of India in 1925 and in 1952, EIR was split into two zones of Indian Railways, namely Northern Railway zone and Eastern Railway zone.[3]
