History
Organisation and administration
There was a demand for a university in the area from a long time. The setting up of Kazi Nazrul University was primarily intended at responding to these local-material needs of democratizing higher education, outside of urban-metropolitan centers of cultural dominance. Professor Anuradha Mukhopadhyay, the first Vice Chancellor, assumed office on 3 December 2012 at the Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA) building. On 10 January 2013, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal Smt. Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone of Kazi Nazrul University on its own campus, close to the birthplace of Kazi Nazrul Islam at Churulia, 31 kilometres away from the city of Asansol.
Governance
Established in 2012, Kazi Nazrul University (KNU) in Asansol functions through a structured governance framework designed to uphold academic integrity and administrative transparency. Named after the Rebel Poet, the university operates under the West Bengal University Laws, ensuring a balanced distribution of power between its internal bodies.
The Executive Council serves as the principal administrative authority, overseeing fiscal management and policy implementation. Complementing this, the University Court acts as a supervisory body, while the Academic Council safeguards the curriculum's rigor. Through these collaborative organs, KNU maintains its commitment to fostering higher education while navigating the complexities of regional institutional growth.

Jurisdiction
In July 2013, the University inaugurated its teaching programs by commencing post graduation classes in four core disciplines – Bengali, English, History and Mathematics – with about one hundred and twenty students. In the academic session 2014-15 four new Postgraduate courses, including M.A in Education, Hindi, Political Science & M.Com., had been introduced. Professor Sadhan Chakraborti joined as the Vice-Chancellor of Kazi Nazrul University in April 2015. Over time, 17 PG departments have started functioning with all necessary infrastructures on the campus of the university and with an actual intake of 1269 students in the academic year 2018-19.
Established in 2012, Kazi Nazrul University (KNU) serves as a pivotal institution for higher education in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal. Named after the visionary "Rebel Poet," the university’s jurisdiction primarily encompasses the Asansol and Durgapur subdivisions.
As an affiliating university, KNU oversees a diverse network of government-aided and private colleges within this industrial belt. Its administrative reach ensures standardized curricula and examination protocols for various undergraduate and postgraduate programs. By focusing on this specific geographical corridor, the university addresses the unique educational needs of the region's urban and rural populations, fostering academic growth and professional development across the coalfield area.

In 2016, a significant milestone in West Bengal’s educational landscape was reached when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee approved the establishment of the Institute for Mines, Minerals and Metallurgic Sciences. Situated in Asansol under the jurisdiction of Kazi Nazrul University, the institute was designed to address the industrial demands of the mineral-rich region.
The government allotted a dedicated seven-acre plot to develop a modern campus. Today, the institute provides a comprehensive academic pipeline, offering programs ranging from Diploma and B.Tech. to M.Sc. and PhD levels. This initiative serves as a pivotal hub for technical research and professional training in metallurgy and mining. The School of Mines and Metallurgy consists of the Department Of Mining Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science).
