Diesel Loco Shed, Erode is an engine shed located on Erode–Chennimalai road in Erode, Tamil Nadu, India. Being closely located to Erode Junction Railway Station, the shed falls under Salem Railway Division of Southern Railway zone. It is one of the four diesel loco sheds in SR others being at Tondiarpet (TNP), Ernakulam (ERS) and Golden Rock (GOC).

History

The shed was opened and became operationally active since September 1966, spreading over a total area of 59,457.9 square metres (59,000 m2) and covered area of 7,454 square metres (7,500 m2). [1][2]

Operations

Like all locomotive sheds, Erode DLS does regular maintenance, overhaul and repair including painting and washing of locomotives. It not only attends to locomotives housed at Erode DLS but also to ones coming in from other sheds as well. It has four pit lines for loco repair.

Locomotives of Erode shed are the regular links for all trains running through Tamil Nadu. Erode locomotives used to be predominantly the regular links for trains traveling on the Southern Railway zone as well. As more and more railway lines were electrified, ED DLS started losing links to electric locomotives, mainly WAP4 and WAG7, WAG-5 and WAP-1 locomotives from nearby electric locomotive sheds. It previosly handled prestigious trains like the Amritha Express & Mumbai CST–Nagercoil Balaji Express, Fast passengers trains and Link Express trains. Being one of the four diesel engine sheds in Southern Railway under the territory of Salem railway division,[3][4] various major and minor maintenance schedules of diesel locomotives are being carried out here. Apart from serving the parent division, the locos belonging to the shed also serves the unelectrified routes of Madurai railway division, in addition to locos from Golden Rock.[5]
