Lutyens media

From Bharatpedia, an open encyclopedia

Lutyens media is a popular term used by the ruling NDA government and their supporters for the sensationalist and biased print and TV news media, which supports the Indian National Congress and other parties that are not aligned to the right-wing. The term has become a common way to refer to television and other media that are perceived as mouthpieces of the Indian National Congress and other parties. The term is also known as the Khan Market Gang which was coined by Narendra Modi during an interview with Financial Express in 2019.[1]

History[edit]

The word Lutyens comes from the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869–1944), who was responsible for much of the architectural design and building during the period of the British Raj, when India was part of the British Empire in the 1920s and 1930s and 1940s. He designed 4 bungalows in the Rashtrapati Bhavan Estate, (Viceroy House Estate); now, these bungalows lie on the Mother Teresa Crescent (then Willingdon Crescent). Lutyens, apart from designing the Viceroy's House, designed large government buildings and was involved with town planning.[2] The area was constructed after the British decided to move the capital of their Indian Empire from Calcutta to Delhi, by creating a new district of the latter entitled New Delhi. Before the new imperial capital was established in 1911, the Old Delhi Railway Station served the Agra-Delhi railways, the line cut through what is today called Lutyens' Delhi. The people of Lutyens' Delhi were able to control the narrative and shape the words of the media and the media they controlled later came to be known as Lutyens media.

Usage and popularity[edit]

The term is widely used by members of the Bhartiya Janata Party and their supporters. In 2019, during an interview with Indian Express, Narendra Modi named the term "Khan Market Gang" stating that "He (Rahul Gandhi) said he wanted to dismantle Narendra Modi’s image. Inherent is to demolish my image anyhow. Modi ki chhavi, Delhi ke Khan Market ke gang ne nahi banayi hai, Lutyens Delhi ne nahi banayi hai. 45 saal ki Modi ki tapasya ne chhavi banayi hai...You cannot dismantle it."

Journalists and editors that have been called Lutyens media include Barkha Dutt,[3] Rajdeep Sardesai, Prannoy Roy, Sagarika Ghose and Shekhar Gupta.[4]
