Aharbal is known for its [[waterfall]], Aharbal Falls, where the Veshu falls noisily 25 metres and 7 metres through a narrow gorge of granite boulders. Aharbal Falls are also referred to as the [[Niagara Falls]] of Kashmir, owing to the volume of the water that falls. According to a report,{{specify|date=January 2013}} the water volume would be sufficient to generate 100 MW of hydroelectricity. The terraces leading to the falls are fenced, but care must be taken to avoid slipping.<ref name="Aharabal Kashmir">{{cite book | author=Allan Stacey | title=Visiting Kashmir | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=WL8j2dGRlzEC&q=Aharbal+waterfall | access-date=27 November 2012 |year=1988 | publisher=Hippocrene Books, 1988 | isbn=978-0-87052-568-1 | page=129}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.greaterkashmir.com/news/2010/Apr/17/niagara-falls-reminded-me-of-my-own-aharbal-49.asp |title=Niagara falls of Kashmir |publisher=greaterkashmir |access-date=2012-11-26 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130728120407/http://www.greaterkashmir.com/news/2010/Apr/17/niagara-falls-reminded-me-of-my-own-aharbal-49.asp |archive-date=2013-07-28 }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2007-10-03/news/28399710_1_tourist-spots-jammu-and-kashmir-tourism|title=Tourist spots JK Tourism|work=The Economic Times|access-date=2012-11-27}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.dailykashmirimages.com/news-girl-jumps-into-aharbal-fall-24627.aspx |archive-url=https://archive.today/20130120083058/http://www.dailykashmirimages.com/news-girl-jumps-into-aharbal-fall-24627.aspx |url-status=dead |archive-date=2013-01-20 |title=Girl jumps into Aharabal Falls |publisher=kashmirimages.com |access-date=2012-11-26 }}</ref>
The Aharbal Waterfall is the principal attraction of the locality. At this point, the Veshaw River descends approximately 25 metres through a rocky gorge formed by resistant granite formations. The waterfall is known for increased discharge during snowmelt and monsoon seasons.

Viewing terraces and basic safety infrastructure have been developed by local authorities to facilitate tourism. The site attracts visitors throughout the year, with higher tourist activity during summer months and following winter snowfall.<ref>{{cite news |title=Kashmir's Aharbal witnesses surge in tourist arrivals |work=The Times of India |date=7 February 2024 |url=https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/travel/travel-news/kashmirs-aharbal-witnesses-a-surge-in-tourist-arrivals-amidst-recent-snowfall/articleshow/107501554.cms |access-date=22 February 2026}}</ref>

Experts believe that the site which is rich in fossil biodiversity and replete with dense fossil samples at specific locations can be as old as 488 to 354 million years. However, the exact date can be ascertained only after radiocarbon dating.

Preliminary investigation it was revealed that the fossils fall between the Ordovician and Devonian period. “The different organisms of that period include bryozoans (colonial animals); gastropods, trilobites, ancestors of C scorpions, and ancient relatives of snails etc,”

In 2021, fossil-bearing rock formations were reported approximately 2 kilometres from Aharbal waterfall along the Kunghwatan route. Preliminary investigations suggested that the site contains dense fossil assemblages possibly dating from the Ordovician to Devonian periods (approximately 488–354 million years ago).

Reported fossil specimens include bryozoans, gastropods, trilobites, and other marine invertebrates characteristic of the Paleozoic era. The site has been secured by the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums for scientific documentation and preservation.<ref>{{cite news |last=Gul |first=Khalid |title=Authorities secure newly discovered Aharbal fossil site |work=Greater Kashmir |date=4 September 2021 |url=https://www.greaterkashmir.com/front-page-2/authorities-secure-newly-discovered-aharbal-fossil-site |access-date=22 February 2026}}</ref>

Aharbal is a hill station and tourist destination located in the south-western part of the Kashmir Valley in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It lies in the Noorabad area of Kulgam district, approximately 70–75 kilometres south-west of Srinagar. The locality is best known for the Aharbal Waterfall on the Veshaw River, and is sometimes referred to as the “Niagara of Kashmir” due to the volume and force of its waters.[2]

Geography[edit | edit source]

Aharbal is situated at an elevation of approximately 2,266 metres (7,434 ft) above sea level in the Pir Panjal range. The region is characterised by alpine meadows, dense coniferous forests of pine and fir, and mountainous terrain typical of the south-western Kashmir Valley.

The Veshaw River (also spelled Veshu or Veshav), a tributary of the Jhelum River, flows through a narrow granite gorge at Aharbal, forming the prominent waterfall before descending toward the lower valley. The area includes trekking routes and viewpoints overlooking the Pir Panjal mountains and surrounding valleys.

Aharbal Waterfall[edit | edit source]

The Aharbal Waterfall is the principal attraction of the locality. At this point, the Veshaw River descends approximately 25 metres through a rocky gorge formed by resistant granite formations. The waterfall is known for increased discharge during snowmelt and monsoon seasons.

Viewing terraces and basic safety infrastructure have been developed by local authorities to facilitate tourism. The site attracts visitors throughout the year, with higher tourist activity during summer months and following winter snowfall.[3]

Aharbal Development Authority[edit | edit source]

The Aharbal Development Authority is responsible for tourism development and infrastructure management in the area. Facilities established include tourist huts, limited lodging arrangements, and cafeteria services to support seasonal visitor inflow.[4]

Fossil site[edit | edit source]

In 2021, fossil-bearing rock formations were reported approximately 2 kilometres from Aharbal waterfall along the Kunghwatan route. Preliminary investigations suggested that the site contains dense fossil assemblages possibly dating from the Ordovician to Devonian periods (approximately 488–354 million years ago).

Reported fossil specimens include bryozoans, gastropods, trilobites, and other marine invertebrates characteristic of the Paleozoic era. The site has been secured by the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums for scientific documentation and preservation.[5]

The fossil discovery has drawn attention to the geo-heritage significance of the region and discussions regarding conservation and regulated geo-tourism.

Access[edit | edit source]
