Thalapathy 68 is the working title of an upcoming Indian Tamil-language film written and directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by AGS Entertainment. The film stars Vijay, leading an ensemble cast that includes Prabhu Deva, Prashanth, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Vaibhav, Mohan, Jayaram and Sneha.

Initially, Atlee was reported to director the project, but subsequently, Prabhu was brought on board. The film was announced in May 2023 under the tentative title Thalapathy 68, as it is Vijay's 68th film in a leading role. Principal photography began in October 2023. Yuvan Shankar Raja will compose the music, while the cinematography and editing will be handled by Siddhartha Nuni and Praveen K. L.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

In late November 2021, Vijay, who had successful collaborations with director Atlee, was reported to join hands for the fourth time with the latter for his 68th film in a lead role, after previously working in Theri (2016), Mersal (2017) and Bigil (2019). It was to begin production after Atlee had finished the works of his debut Hindi film Jawan (2023).[1] That December, Yuvan Shankar Raja posted a picture of him with Vijay, leading to speculations of their collaboration.[2] At an award night in May 2022, Yuvan hinted about his reunion with Vijay after Pudhiya Geethai (2003), saying that it would happen soon.[3] In May 2023 however, it was confirmed that Atlee would not be directing the film, as he had already committed to another project with actor Varun Dhawan.[4] That month, there were multiple reports that either Venkat Prabhu or Gopichand Malineni would direct the film.[5][6]

Prabhu had met Vijay in mid May and narrated a story to him, by which the latter was impressed. He also asked Prabhu to develop the full script. In an interview that month, Prabhu expressed his idea of doing a time loop film with Vijay, after previously doing the same for Maanaadu (2021).[7] On 21 May, the film was officially announced by Vijay through his social media pages under the working title Thalapathy 68, with Prabhu confirmed as the director.[8] Kalpathi S. Aghoram, Kalpathi S. Ganesh and Kalpathi S. Suresh were revealed to produce the film under AGS Entertainment. It is the company's 25th production venture and second collaboration with Vijay after Bigil. Yuvan was confirmed as the music composer.[9] Cinematography is handled by Siddhartha Nuni,[10] editing by Praveen K. L. and art direction by Rajeevan.[11]

Prabhu and Vijay's collaboration had been in talks for about ten months. While working on Custody (2023), Prabhu narrated a short script to Vijay when he was filming for Varisu (2023).[12][13] Furthermore, multiple reports stated that Vijay would receive a remuneration of 200 crore (US$28 million), which would make him the highest-paid film actor in India.[14][15] In August, the team left for Los Angeles to use visual effects scanning to create the look of one of Vijay's characters; this technique was previously used for Fan (2016) and Indian 2.[10] A muhurat puja was held on 2 October 2023 at Prasad Labs in Chennai with the presence of the film's cast and crew.[16]

Casting[edit]

Vijay was reported to play dual roles as father and son, which he previously did in Bigil.[17] In late May 2023, S. J. Suryah was reported to play the antagonist, after previously doing so for Mersal.[18] It was also reported that either Tamannaah Bhatia, Jyothika or Krithi Shetty were in consideration for the lead actress;[19][20] however, it was later reported that Prabhu considered Simran in lead actress role, paired alongside the father character of Vijay, and Priyanka Arul Mohan or Meenakshi Chaudhary for the son character.[21][22][23] Prabhu Deva was also reported to be part of the cast.[24] In early September, Sneha was reported to be a part of the cast,[25] and Prashanth was confirmed to be in talks for playing an important role in the film.[26] Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Chaudhary, Priyanka, Sneha, Laila, Vaibhav, Mohan and Jayaram were confirmed to be a part of the cast, as they were present at the muhurat puja.[27][28]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography commenced on 3 October 2023 with the first schedule in Chennai.[29] A song revolving around the younger Vijay and choreographed by Raju Sundaram would be filmed in this schedule using artificial intelligence.[27]

Music[edit]

The soundtrack and film score will be composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, in his second collaboration with Vijay after Pudhiya Geethai, and tenth with Prabhu.[30] The audio rights were reportedly bought by T-Series for a record price.[31] Yuvan said the first single would be a dappankuthu number.[32]

Marketing[edit]

A few days after the film was announced, a large banner promoting it was erected in Malaysia. However, it was unclear whether it was put up by the production company or the fans.[33]

Release[edit]

Home media[edit]

The streaming rights were reportedly acquired by Netflix for a record price.[34]
