Payyavoor is a town in Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala.It is the headquarter of Payyavoor Panchayat.

Location[edit]

Payyavoor is located 43 km north east of District HQ Kannur, 30 km east of Taluk HQ Taliparamba and 20 km north of Iritty. The nearest municipality Sreekandapuram is 10 km away.

Shiva Festival[edit]

The Festival in the Temple of Lord Siva here is very famous which is celebrated from 1 to 12 Kumbham . There is a Knanaya Catholic Church in the town named St. Anne's Church.

Oottu Festival at Shiva Temple[edit]

The Oottu festival at the temple of Lord Shiva is the unique celebration of the village. It is celebrated from 1 to 12 of Kumbam, the 7th month as per the Malayalam Calendar, every year. People, irrespective of caste and religion, come to celebrate this festival. People from Kodagu district (Karnataka) also come for the festival with offerings.^[2] The Festival starts on 12 February (Makaram 30) and ends on 24 February (Kumbham 12). The Festival is considered as 'Sangamma' of the people from Kodagu and Kerala. Before the commencement of the festival devotees from Kodagu arrive at the temple with their cattle and offerings of rice that is used 'Prasada oota' for festival time. A variety of legends exist on the beginnings of this festival.

Landmarks[edit]

There are some establishments like Panchayat Office, Village Office, Police Station, Hospitals, Schools, College at this place. There is a mosque also the presence of which signifies the harmonious co-existence of the people. People of Hindu, Christian and Muslim religions live here in utmost communal harmony. Almost all the basic facilities are here and the people depend Sreekandapuram or Iritty for their further needs.

Transportation[edit]

Kerala hill highway (SH 59) passes through Payyavoor town which connects nearby towns like Chemperi, Ulikkal, Iritty, Naduvil, Karuvanchal, Alakode etc. Kerala state highway (SH 36) passes through Sreekandapuram town of about 10 km west from here.

The National Highway (NH 66) is accessible from Taliparamba town of 30 km away. Mangalore and Mumbai can be accessed on the northern side and Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram can be accessed on the southern side. The road to the east connects to Mysore and Bangalore.

The nearest railway station is Kannur on Shoranur-Mangalore section line. Nearest airport is Kannur of 26 km south. Mangalore and Calicut are other nearby options available.

Demographics[edit]

As of 2011^[update] India census, Payyavoor village had a population of 22,998 with 11,373 males and 11,625 females. The sex ratio was 1,022 women per 1,000 men. Total number of households were 5,698 in village limits. Population of children in age group 0-6 was 2,359 (10.3%) which constitutes 1,219 males and 1,140 females. Payyavoor had overall literacy of 95.46% where male literacy was 96.8% and female literacy was 94.1%.^[3]

Geography[edit]

Payyavoor is a hilly village on the eastern side of Kannur district. The terrain is undulating in nature and the extreme eastern side has forests bordering Karnataka state. Payyavoor river flows through the north, and Koottupuzha river (combination of Mundayapuzha River and Payyavoor river) flows through west of the Payyavoor.

Alex Nagar[edit]

Alex Nagar is a suburb of Payyavoor at a distance of five kilometers on Sreekandapuram road. Valapattanam river passes through this village. There is one church and one temple in Alex nagar.
