Mahesh Kumar Sharma is an Indian politician belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was elected in the 2014 Indian general election from Gautam Buddh Nagar. He is a physician by profession and owns the Kailash Group of Hospitals based in Noida.[1] On 12 November 2014, he was appointed as a Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and Tourism[2] and Civil Aviation.[3][4] He has also served as the first MLA of Noida vidhan sabha in Uttar Pradesh.

Life and career[edit]

Mahesh Sharma was born on 30 September 1959 in Manethi village near Neemrana in Alwar district of Rajasthan. His father, Kailash Chand Sharma, was a school teacher. He did his early schooling in the village. For senior secondary education, he moved to Delhi. He graduated from the University College of Medical Sciences.[5] In 2012, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Amity University, Noida.[6]

He was involved with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since childhood. During his student days, he became associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Later, he joined BJP.[5][7] In 2012, he was elected as an MLA from Noida during the assembly election.[8]

Personal life[edit]

Sharma is a doctor by profession.[9] He married Uma Sharma on 22 January 1987.[1] Uma Sharma is a gynecologist. Uma is the head of the department of obstetrics and gynaecologist at the Kailash Hospital and Heart Institute. Uma Sharma is also the vice chairperson of the Kailash Healthcare Limited.[5] He has a daughter, Pallavi, and a son, Kartik, both of them are also medical professionals.[5][10]

Controversies[edit]

In September 2015, Mahesh Sharma met major controversy after stating: "We have renamed Aurangzeb Road after a person, who despite being a Muslim, is a great nationalist....", in reference to the late great and former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, a Muslim.[11] His rivalry with BJP Leader Nawab Singh Nagar has been quite in limelight as Dr Mahesh was accused of using his veto power against Nagar since he was afraid of Nagar's stronghold in his constituency.[12] Ever since, he has been accused of being anti-gujjar community.

In 2016, he visited Ravi Sisodia's family, one of the prime attackers in the 2015 Dadri lynching who died in police custody. After his visit and intervention, the local administration accepted the family's demands, including paying them ₹ 25 lakh as compensation and ordering a CBI inquiry to determine how he died.[13]
