The languages spoken in Nepal, constitutionally termed as Nepalese languages, refer to those with historical roots or origins within the country’s borders. As per the 2021 National Population and Housing Census, Nepal recorded 124 mother tongues in its National Report on Caste/Ethnicity, Language & Religion.
Nepali serves as the mother tongue for 44.86% of the population and functions as a secondary language for 46.2%. Most languages fall under the Indo-Aryan and Sino-Tibetan families.
While Nepali is the sole federal-level official language, the constitution allows provinces to adopt additional official languages. In 2021, Nepal’s Language Commission proposed 14 languages for provincial official use.
These native languages often called Nepali languages.
National language[edit | edit source]
As per Nepal's constitution, every mother tongue spoken in the country is recognized as a national language.[1] The linguistic landscape includes numerous dialects alongside distinct languages. For instance, the Rai community alone uses around 30 languages, some of which share similarities and could be classified as dialects. The line separating dialects from languages often remains blurred in practice.
Classification[edit | edit source]
Nepal's linguistic landscape is primarily composed of Indo-European and Sino-Tibetan language families, with a small presence of Austro-Asiatic and Dravidian languages. Among the 123 languages spoken in Nepal, the Indo-European family, specifically its Indo-Aryan (Indic) branch (excluding English), dominates with 48 languages spoken by approximately 82.1% of the population. This group includes major languages like Nepali, Bhojpuri, Maithili, Awadhi, various Tharu languages, and Hindi. The Sino-Tibetan family, particularly its Tibeto-Burman subgroup, encompasses about 63 languages spoken by 17.3% of Nepalis, including Tamang, Nepal Bhasa (Newar), Magar, and Limbu. The Dravidian family is represented by Kurux, while the Austroasiatic family includes Santali and Mundari from the Munda branch. Among Nepal's indigenous languages that existed before the arrival of Indo-Aryan and Tibeto-Burman languages, only Kusunda remains, though it is nearly extinct. Additionally, Nepal has several indigenous village sign languages - Jhankot, Jumla, and Ghandruk - alongside the nationally recognised Nepali Sign Language.
Constitutional status[edit | edit source]
Part 1 of the Constitution of Nepal 2015 (2072 B.S.) contains these provisions about the languages of Nepal:[2]
- Article 6: All languages spoken as the mother tongue in Nepal are the languages of the nation.
- Article 7(1): The Nepali language in the Devanagari script shall be the official language of Nepal.
- Article 7(2): A Province may, by a provincial law, determine one or more than one languages of the nation spoken by a majority of people within the Province as its official language or languages, in addition to the Nepali language.

Official languages[edit | edit source]
Nepal's constitution establishes Nepali in Devanagari script as the official federal language, while allowing provincial governments to designate additional official languages. The Language Commission has recommended specific regional languages for official use in each province: Maithili and Limbu in Province 1; Maithili, Bhojpuri and Bajjika in Province 2; Tamang and Nepal Bhasa in Bagmati; Magar and Gurung in Gandaki; Tharu and Awadhi in Lumbini; the Karnali dialect of Khas Bhasa (Nepali) along with Magar in Karnali Province; and Dotyali with Tharu in Sudurpashchim Province.
Scripts[edit | edit source]
Most of the languages are found exclusively in oral form. According to the Language Commission, fifteen scripts are currently in use in Nepal,[5][6] including the following:
