Jawan (soundtrack)

Jawan is the soundtrack album, composed by Anirudh Ravichander to the 2023 Hindi film of the same name, directed by Atlee starring Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi in lead roles. The film is produced by Gauri Khan and Gaurav Verma under his banner Red Chillies Entertainment.

The lyrics for the songs has been penned by Irshad Kamil and Kumaar in Hindi. Vivek (Tamil), Chandrabose (Telugu) wrote lyrics for the dubbed versions.

The album featuring seven tracks was released on 5 September 2023. "Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya" garnered over 53 million views within 24 hours, becoming most viewed Indian song in 24 hours, surpassing record held by "Zinda Banda".

ProductionEdit

A. R. Rahman was reportedly approached by director Atlee to compose for the film.[1] Rahman subsequently declined the offer for reasons unknown, and Anirudh was chosen to compose for the film.[2] This marked his debut as a solo composer in Bollywood, previously having composed a song for David and the background score of Jersey.[3] Anirudh reportedly took ₹10 crore as his salary, becoming the highest-paid India music composer.[4]

Irshad Kamil and Kumaar were hired to write the lyrics for the film. In an interview, the Anirudh stated that the Tamil version of song "Zinda Banda", titled "Vandha Edam" was recorded first. Later it was recorded in Hindi version.[5] Anirudh himself recorded the song and was penned by Irshad Kamil.[6] Opening phrase of the song was sung by Mangli under the supervision of Sri Krishna.[7]

The song "Chaleya" was recorded by Arijit Singh and Shilpa Rao, and had lyrics written by Kumaar.[8] Anirudh revealed that he met Shilpa Rao for recording the track, as per Shah Rukh Khan's suggestion as she had earlier perfomed "Besharam Rang" in Pathaan (2023).

The song "Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya", had the reference to the song "Ramaiya Vastavaiya" from the film Shree 420 (1955).[9] Its lines also had the song "Chaiya Chaiya" from the film Dil Se.. (1998).[10] It was sung by Anirudh, Vishal Dadlani, Shilpa Rao, and was written by Kumaar.[11]

The track "Aararaari Raaro" had vocals by Deepti Suresh and lyrics by Irshad Kamil. The track "Jawan Title Track" had English rap written and performed by Raja Kumari, with Anirudh and BNiznik performing. The track "Faraatta" was sung by Arijit Singh and Jonita Gandhi. The lyrics were penned by Kumaar. It also had rap written and performed by Badshah.[12]

The music rights were bagged by T-Series for ₹36 crore,[13] which was a record price for a Hindi album.[14]

The track "Jawan Prevue Theme", featured in the two-minute promo video, was released on 10 July 2023.[15] The first single titled "Zinda Banda" was released on 31 July 2023.[16] It garnered over 46 million views within 24 hours, setting an all-time record for most viewed Indian song in 24 hours.[17] The second single titled "Chaleya" was released on 14 August 2023.[18] The third single titled "Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya" was released on 29 August 2023.[19] It garnered over 53 million views within 24 hours, becoming most viewed Indian song in 24 hours, surpassing record held by "Zinda Banda".[20] The film's grand audio launch was held on 30 August 2023 at Sri Sai Ram Engineering College, Chennai.[21][22] On 31 August 2023, an Arabic version of the song "Chaleya" was released under the title "Chaleya Arabic" at an event held at the Burj Khalifa.[23]

The album featuring seven tracks was released on 5 September 2023.[24]

Hindustan Times writing for the track "Zinda Banda" stated "The song is a fun and groovy one as it makes you want to dance to its beats."[25] Prachi Arya of India Today wrote "With lyrics penned by the acclaimed Irshad Kamil, 'Zinda Banda' also showcases the versatile talent of Anirudh, who not only composed the entire album for 'Jawan' but also lent his voice to this energetic dance number. The song encapsulates the spirit of the film, exuding grandness, vibrancy and celebration."[26]

ABP News reviewed "Chaleya" and wrote "The song brings back the timeless magic of Shah Rukh Khan and Arijit Singh's collaboration which has given the audience some of the most romantic and soulful numbers. This heartfelt melody marks the triumphant return of romance, featuring the King of Romance himself."[27]

Saikat Chakraborty who reviewed "Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya" for Telegraph India, "The Bollywood freestyle dance captures the free-flowing nature of the lyrics penned by Kumaar."[28] The Indian Express compared the song with "Ghungroo" from War (2019) and "Besharam Rang" from Pathaan (2023).[29]

ImpactEdit

The first single "Zinda Banda" became the most viewed Indian song in 24 hours, gaining 47 million in 24 hours.[33] The second single "Chaleya" garned over 35 million views in 24 hours.[34] Surpassing the record by "Zinda Banda", the third single "Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya" garned over 53 million views within 24 hours of its release. Thus it became the most viewed Indian song in 24 hours.[35]

After the song "Zinda Banda" was released in July 2023, the hook step choreographed by Shobi Paulraj and performed by Khan in the music video went viral.[36] Many people have recreated the hook step (signature step) by recording themselves dancing to the song and posting their videos on social media.[37] Later, other songs followed this trend.[38]
