List of districts of Maharashtra

Maharashtra is an Indian state that was formed on 1 May, 1960 with 22 initial districts on 1974. Since then, 14 additional districts have been created, and the state currently has 36 districts. These districts are grouped into six administrative divisions shown below.

Regions[edit]
Geographically, historically, politically, and according to cultural sentiments, Maharashtra has five main regions:
- Konkan - (Konkan Division)
- Paschim Maharashtra also known as Desh - (Pune Division)
- Khandesh - (Nashik Division)[lower-alpha 1]
- Marathwada - (Aurangabad Division)
- Vidarbha - (Nagpur and Amravati divisions) - formerly part of (Central Provinces and Berar)[lower-alpha 2]

- ↑ Nashik district culturally does not belong to Khandesh region. Culturally, Nashik and Ahmednagar districts share a same pattern which was called Gangathadi.
- ↑ Amravati Division used to be a separate region of Central Provinces and Berar as Berar Division known as "Varhad" in Marathi before becoming part of Vidharbha Division of Maharashtra.
