North Maharashtra is a geographical region in the Maharashtra state of India. It comprises the Nasik, Dhule, Nandurbar, and Jalgaon districts.[1]

History[edit]

Chalukya kings ruled the southern part of region during ancient times.[2][full citation needed] The 160 sq.meters fort in Parola is believed that once belong to the father of Queen of Jhansi.[3] On 13 March 1795 Marathas defeated Nizam of Ahmadnagar and Jalgaon district became part of Maratha Kingdom.[3]:6–8

In 1956 Jalgaon became part of new established Bombay state and in 1960 after formation Maharashtra it became part of Maharashtra state.

Geography[edit]

In the summer season, the temperature in the region climbs to over 44 °C.[4]

Rivers[edit]

This region have Godawari river at Nashik. Tapi, Panjhara river in Dhule, Nandurbar district.[5]

Dams[edit]

Jalgaon district have Hatnur dam on Tapti river also have Garbardi dam near Pal hill station, Waghur dam near Jamner town. Nashik district has Gangapur, Nandur-Madheshwar dam on Godawari river.[6]

Crops[edit]

  • Jalgaon district -

Farmers of this district grows Jowar, Cotton, different kinds of lentils, Chickpeas, Wheat.

  • Nashik district -

This regions common crops are Rice, Jowar, Ground nuts, Onions, Wheat, Sugarcane and most growing crop of this district Grapes.

  • Dhule district-

Cotton, Jowar, Ground nuts, lentils, Wheat, Chickpeas.

  • Nandurbar district-

Rice, Jowar, Ground nuts, Maize, Chickpeas, various lentils are some crops are usually farmers grow here.[7]

Economy[edit]

The economy of the region relies on agriculture and common variety of crops include cotton, sugarcane, lentils, maze, bananas, peas and wheat. The Jalgaon district is informally called as "Banana Capital of India". The district is the largest producer of bananas in Maharashtra and grows the world's seventh largest banana crop.[8]

Nashik district is also a leader in grapes production; only Niphad, in Dindori talukas is ahead of Nashik in grapes growing in this part of North Maharashtra.[9]

Educational facilities[edit]

North Maharashtra University serves the Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalgaon districts, Its headquarters is located in Jalgaon.[10][11]

Culture[edit]

Marathi poet Bahinabai Chaudhary was born in Bhadli village near Bhusawal in Jalgaon district. Poet Balkavi Thombre and Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, writers of many acclaimed poetry works by scholars of Marathi literature, were both from the region. Thombre was born in Jalgaon district and was a child prodigy. Shirwadkr also was a prominent novelist, his play Natsamrat is considered as epic work of literature in the Maharashtra state.
