Dr. Ashok Laxmanrao Kukade (aka. Kukade Kaka) is a well known Indian physician, author and social worker, who was awarded Padma Bhushan (2019),[1] India's third-highest civilian award for his work in the medical field.[2] He is the founder of Vivekanand Hospital and Research Center in Latur, Maharashtra.[3]
Early life and Education[edit]
Dr. Ashok Kukade was born in well educated family. His father Laxmanrao Kukade was a famous physician in Pune, Maharashtra. His family shifted to Narayan Peth, Pune in 1952. He was one of the brightest students of his class. After his primary studies, he was admitted to Fergusson college, Pune. He was a gold medallist and University topper in M.B.B.S. course. After that he completed his M.S. in Surgery. Due to his childhood association with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he was inclined towards social work and patriotism. He volunteered in various camps and social works during his school days including drought of 1953.[4]
Settling in Latur[edit]
He was inclined towards social work from his childhood. As a result, after completion of education, he decided to apply his knowledge to the benefit of the society, especially where there are very less medical facilities available. He came to Latur in 1966 with his wife Jyotsna Kukade (Also a doctor and social worker) and established Vivekanand Hospital on 4 January 1966, the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Dr. Bharadia and Dr. Alurkar were associates and co-founders of hospital. At that time, Latur was lacking even basic medical facilities.
Vivekanand Hospital[edit]
During early years in 1966, hospital was established in a single room. Due to the dedication in work, hospital saw very good response in early years. As a result a new building was constructed and inaugurated on 15 August 1969.
Emergency Years[edit]
Dr. Kukade was arrested along with several other RSS leaders during the Internal Emergency imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975.[5] He was shifted to Nashik Jail on 6 July 1975. During the imprisonment, he helped the prison administration by providing medication and support for patients and political prisoners. He organised many blood donation camps as well as performed surgeries in prison during his stay. He was released from prison in March 1977.
Social Work[edit]
Drought of 1970-1973[edit]
Dr. Kukade worked with dedication during the drought of 1970-1973. He managed to provide food for I.T.I hostel students. Also, he opened a primary medical centre in Gangapur, a village near Latur city in 1972.
Personal life[edit]
Dr. Ashok Kukade currently lives in Latur with this wife. He has a daughter who is also a dedicated social worker in Pune.
