Electric Loco Shed, Kazipet is a motive power depot performing locomotive maintenance and repair facility for electric locomotives of the Indian Railways, located at Kazipet of the South Central Railway zone in Telangana, India. It is one of the three electric loco sheds in the SCR the others being at Lallaguda (LGD) and Vijayawada (BZA). As of 1 May 2022 there are 187 locomotives in the Shed.

History

After South Central Railway set a deadline to eliminate all steam locomotive operations by 1990, a push was given towards establishing electric locomotion as the primary motive power, and the steam locomotive sheds were decommissioned.[1] To meet the needs of exponentially increasing rail traffic on the new continuous broad-gauge lines from Andhra Pradesh to rest of India with the completion of electrification the Kazipet was selected by Indian Railways for a new electric locomotive shed.[2] The trip Shed was inaugurated on 14 October 2004 and the main Shed was inaugurated on 1 March 2008 with a holding of 100 locos. The shed augmentation works from 100 to 125 locos was sanctioned and implemented. [3]

Operations

Being one of the three electric engine sheds in South Central Railway, various major and minor maintenance schedules of electric locomotives are carried out here. It has the sanctioned capacity of 100 engine units. Beyond the operating capacity, this shed houses a total of 172 engine units, including 100 WAG-7 and 72 WAG-9. Like all locomotive sheds, KZJ does regular maintenance, overhaul and repair including painting and washing of locomotives.[4]
