Charanjit Singh Channi (born 1 March 1963)[1] is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Punjab.[2] He is a member of the Indian National Congress.[2] He was previously Minister of Technical Education and Training in Second Amarinder Singh ministry and leader of the opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly.[2] . He is the first Sikh Cheif Minister of Punjab belonging to backward class.

Early life, education and personal life

Channi was born in the village of Makrauna Kalan, Punjab.[2] He read law at Panjab University and has an MBA from PTU Jalandhar.[2] He belongs to the Dalit Sikh community.[3][4][5][6][7][8] He is currently pursuing PhD from Panjab University Chandigarh in topic related to Indian National Congress with Professor Emanual Nahar as his guide.[9]

He is married to Kamaljit Kaur and has two children.[10]

Channi was leader of opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly from 2015 to 2016.[2]

Chief Minister

Succeeding Amarinder Singh

In September 2021, he succeeded Captain Amarinder Singh as Chief Minister of Punjab after the latter's resignation.[2][11] He is the first Dalit Sikh Chief Minister of Punjab.[12][13][14][15] Commentators suggested that Punjab's large Dalit population and attempts by other parties to appeal to it may have influenced Congress's choice of Channi as Singh's successor.[16][17]

On 26 September fifteen new ministers were sworn in; several ministers from the Second Amarinder Singh ministry were retained.[18] [19]

Policies

Soon after taking office, Channi made several policy announcements. On 21 September he promised action concerning a sacrilege case and said that the electricity bills of water works schemes would be waived and connections would be restored.[20] On 23 September he stated "Class D" government jobs would be regularised; they were previously outsourced.[21] He also was criticised by Arvind Kejriwal as the latter commented on his" attire, also told him to buy clothes."

Controversies

In 2018 a video showed Channi flipping a coin to choose between two candidates to be lecturer. The BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal called on voters to remove him. The minister said that both candidates were equal and suggested the toss themselves.[22]

Channi is alleged to have constructed an illegal road in an auspicious layout on the advice of his astrologer, which was demolished by the Chandigarh authorities. He also is reported to have followed the advice of his astrologer and ridden an elephant at his home.[23]

Sukhpal Khaira of the Aam Aadmi Party accused Channi and his nephew of involvement in illegal mining. Channi responded that the images cited were from public functions and that his family has no involvement in mining.[24]


As the minister of technical education, Channi was accused of recommending the transfer of an Indian Administrative Service officer "whom he didn't like".[25] In another case, he was accused of sending obscene messages to a female IAS officer, Kavita Singh.[26]

In 2018, he had sent inappropriate texts to a female IAS officer.[27] He continued sending vulgar messages, following which the IAS officer escalated the complaint to senior authorities including the chief minister.[28]
