Jawan (transl. Soldier) is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language action thriller film co-written and directed by Atlee, in his first Hindi film.[3] It is produced by Gauri Khan and Gaurav Verma under Red Chillies Entertainment. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role, alongside Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone (billed as a special appearance), Priyamani and Sanya Malhotra.[4][5]

Principal photography commenced in September 2021 with filming taking place in Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Rajasthan and Aurangabad. The film's soundtrack and background score were composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography by G. K. Vishnu and editing by Ruben.

Jawan was initially planned for release on 2 June 2023, but was postponed due to unfinished post-production work.[6] It is now scheduled for theatrical release on 7 September 2023, coinciding with Janmashtami.

Premise

Jawan is a action entertainer that follows the journey of a man who sets out to rectify the wrongs in the society.[7][8][9]

Cast

Production

Development

In late 2019, it was rumored that Shah Rukh Khan would team up with Tamil film director Atlee.[15][16] Atlee confirmed the project while promoting Bigil.[17] In May 2021, it was reported that the filming would commence soon.[18] The film is produced by Gauri Khan under Red Chillies Entertainment, while Gaurav Verma serves as a co-producer.[19] The company made a public announcement on 3 June 2022, confirming the project.[20] The film is being made on a budget of ₹200–220 crore.[1][2]

Atlee co-wrote the film's script along with S. Ramana Girivasan, in his fourth consecutive collaboration with the director.[21] Sumit Arora contributed the dialogues.[22] Altee further retained most of his norm technicians including cinematographer G. K. Vishnu, editor Ruben, art director T. Muthuraj and stunt director Anal Arasu.[23] Spiro Razatos,[24] Craig Macrae,[25] Yannick Ben,[26] Kecha Khamphakdee[27] and Sunil Rodrigues also were hired as stunt directors.[28] Dance choreographers of the film includes Farah Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant, Shobi and Lalitha.[29]

Casting

Khan was reported to play dual role, as father and son, and would be seen in six different looks.[30] Nayanthara was finalized as the female lead opposite Khan, thus marking her Hindi cinema debut.[31][32] Priyamani, Sunil Grover, Sanya Malhotra and Yogi Babu later joined the cast. Babu joined with Khan after a decade, last he acted with Khan in Chennai Express. Rana Daggubati was offered the antagonist role but declined citing health issues and thus the role went to Vijay Sethupathi.[33][34][35] Deepika Padukone joined the cast in August 2022 in Chennai to shoot her cameo.[36] In September 2022, Vijay was confirmed to make a cameo in the film.[37] In March 2023, Sanjay Dutt joined the cast to shoot an action-packed cameo.[38]

Filming

Principal photography commenced in September 2021 in Pune.[39] Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara joined the 10–days shoot.[40] It is the first film to be shot at Pune Metro.[41] Khan resumed the shoot in June 2022 in Hyderabad.[42] Nayanthara joined the Mumbai schedule on 26 June 2022, after her marriage.[43] Some family sequences were taken in this schedule.[44]

In August, next schedule started in Chennai, where Deepika Padukone shot her cameo part.[45][46] Later Vijay Sethupathi joined the shoot. Some action sequences between Khan and Sethupathi were taken in this schedule.[47][48] A song featuring Priyamani and Khan was also shot in this schedule, in jail.[49] A month long Chennai schedule was wrapped on 7 October.[50][51]

Next schedule was held in Rajasthan, in October.[52] Khan and Nayanthara joined this 20–days schedule.[53] Next schedule was held in February 2023,[54] where Khan shot some chase scenes.[55] Sanjay Dutt joined the shoot on 20 March 2023,[56] to shoot an action-packed cameo.[57] Shooting wrapped in April 2023, with 2 songs, featuring Khan and Nayanthara, and the other one featuring Deepika Padukone for her cameo appearance.[58] In mid July, a song featuring Khan and Nayanthara, choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant was shot at the Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai.[59][60]

Post-production

Post-production for the film began by January 2023 and went on for six months as the film involves extensive computer graphics and visual effects.[61] Editing was handled by Ruben.[62] The VFX work of the film is done by Red Chillies VFX.[63] Harry Hingorani served as the visual effects supervisor with Keitan Yadav as the VFX producer of the film.[64] In April, the company hired visual effects technicians to the team.[65] Ken Metzker of Red Chillies Color did the coloring for the film.[66] Kunal Rajan served as the sound designer.[67]

Music

A. R. Rahman was reportedly approached by director Atlee to compose for the film.[68] Rahman subsequently declined the offer for reasons unknown, and Anirudh Ravichander was chosen to compose for the film, who would thus mark his debut as a solo composer in Bollywood, previously having composed a song for David and the background score of Jersey.[69] The music rights were bagged by T-Series for ₹36 crore.[70]

The track "Jawan Prevue Theme", featured in the two-minute promo video, was released on 10 July 2023.[71] It had rap written and performed by Raja Kumari, with Anirudh and BNiznik performing.[72]

Marketing

The film's title, along with a glimpse video was released on 3 June 2022.[73] Later the film got postponed and a new release date was announced through a motion poster released on 6 May 2023.[74] A teaser trailer, titled "Jawan Prevue" was released on 10 July 2023.[75] It became the most watched Indian teaser in 24 hours with over 112 million views.[76] Later, the teaser was attached to the prints of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in theatres.[77]

Release

Theatrical

Jawan is scheduled for a theatrical release on 7 September 2023 in Hindi along with dubbed versions of Tamil and Telugu languages.[78] Earlier the film was scheduled to release on 2 June 2023. Later in May 2023, it was reported that film is delayed to August 2023.[79][80][81] The film was later reported to release on the original release date,[82] However, later it was confirmed that the film will release on 7 September 2023.[83] Pen Studios acquired the theatrical rights for North India and West Bengal under the Pen Marudhar Entertainment banner.[84] Red Giant Movies acquired the distribution rights for Tamil Nadu, while Sri Venkateswara Creations acquired the distribution rights for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.[85] The overseas theatrical rights were sold to Yash Raj Films.[86] Rajshri Productions acquired the distribution rights for Orissa.[87] Home Screen Entertainment bought Singapore distribution rights of the film.[88] Non-theatrical rights of the film were sold for ₹250 crore (US$35 million).[89]
