The bus was conducting a trip Mattannur to Chavassery ignoring the threats by CPI(M). The protest is known as "Transport samaram". The protest was launched against the reforms introduced in the Transport Department by CPI led Congress backed government. Achuthamenon was the Chief Minister.

The bus had only one door. The arsonists rushed inside and started fire at the only entrance trapping the hapless passengers. They tried to jump outside through narrow windows, but four people couldn't. Their names are Thankappan, Eramoolan, Chandukkutty, Jayarajan.
