The series opens with Vitthal and his elder sister learning about their mother's death. Vitthal has no interest in studies and is attracted to cards and Lord Shiva, as his father is a local temple priest. When a teacher asks Vitthal to say the number 'three' in Gujarati, he pronounces it as "Teddi" (the notation of three being famous among local card players). This joke spreads quickly through the small village, and everyone starts addressing him as Vitthal Teedi. One morning Vitthal wakes up late for school with his elder sister and gets beaten and scolded by the new Gymnastics teacher. His sister tells the teacher that she had to complete all household work before coming to school due to their mother's recent death. When the teacher makes fun of Vitthal's father, Vitthal takes a stone in his hand and hits the teacher, then runs from the school. His father arrives at school but, instead of scolding him, takes Vitthal with him. For Vittal, this solidifies an unspoken but strong bond with his father.

Young adolescent Vitthal (Pratik Gandhi) now knows all the tricks to win card games and starts gambling under a banyan tree with his friends. Some friends envy his presence; some appreciate his talent. He helps his family with his gambling winnings. He initially wanted to buy a leather jacket to impress his girlfriend, but when he learns that she is going to marry a young man from a different caste, he sacrifices his jacket and asks the tailor to fashion a dress for his sister. He knows how other players think and react when they see their cards and hence wins every match. Yet, he also refrains from card playing during the Shravan month, where he devotes himself to Lord Shiva.

The audience learns that Vitthal has an elder brother, a software engineer in Ahmedabad, western India, who has spent most of his life in that urban city and now invites Vitthal and his father to see a girl for him. They choose a house where Vitthal's elder brother hides his occupation as a gambler. Now Vitthal's elder brother asks them to come to Ahmedabad for his marriage, but his father refuses to go, saying that the whole village is their only family there. They arrange a small gathering and cover-up that the elder son could not get off work that day and will visit the village someday. They generously offer food to every villager, and the function goes smoothly. At the end of the occasion, Vitthal's father tells Vitthal that he may be teedi ('three') for the whole world, but he is his ace of spades for him. Relenting after so many requests, Vitthal's father visits his son in Ahmedabad and asks him to arrange a job for uneducated Vitthal, but the brother refuses. Upon returning with a heavy heart to his native village, Vitthal's father goes to bed without eating dinner.

A member from another large village invites Vitthal after seeing his card game. Vitthal also wants to gather money in preparation for his sister's marriage. He soon shines there, too, and wins enough money to provide his sister with a lavish, expensive wedding. Vitthal informs that he will not be present for some days as his sister will get married. There he meets another rival, Kanu Datti, to whom he loses a match but later, knowing his weakness, bluffs him and wins against him. However, that night a new police officer is on duty and raids the gambling center. Vitthal saves Kanu's life and tells Kanu that he owes him 1,500 since all the money was still at the center. One day an older man comes with a lot of money and bets everything but loses against Vitthal. On the way, Vitthal sees that the man had attempted suicide because he wanted to double his money, as the groom's father increased the dowry amount, and card playing is the only fast way to increase money. Vitthal leaves the money he won from the man and departs the place crying. Now not a big and expensive one, but Vitthal arranges the marriage in a quite normal way and begs his sister's husband to take care of her. Her sister first time asks Vitthal to give him something. She asks him to quit gambling, focuses on a well-settled job, and get married as soon as possible. Vitthal promises as it is the only thing his sister has ever asked from him. Vitthal also invited his elder brother to his only sister's wedding, but he didn't appear, worsening his father's condition.

Reception[edit]

The series received positive reviews. Koimoi rated it 4 out of 5 stars saying, "Vitthal Teedi has all the elements to become a complete package, and the makers have to realise that. You should give it a try because the cast won’t let you get bored for a single moment."[9] Republic rated it 4 out of 5 stars saying, "Vitthal Teedi most definitely delivers what it promises – an ode to the 1980s complete with family drama, social commentary, and the hero – a do-gooder with a darker side that the audience can expect more of in the coming season. This is a diamond in the rough set to win hearts in the coming seasons."[10] Keyur Seta of Cinestaan reviewed it three out of four starts.[11] Vishal Verma of Glamsham also praised performances, production and direction.[12] Subhash K. Jha of SpotboyE also rated it three out of five stars.[13]
