Muktainagar taluka is a taluka in the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra, India. Its eponymous town is its administrative headquarters. The taluka is situated in the North Maharashtra region of the state.[1]
History[edit]
During British rule the taluka was "Edlabad petha"; in the 1950s the region was part of East Khandesh which was later renamed to Jalgaon district. The region was part of the Khandesh district, in 1906 British government divided it to form East Khandesh, West Khandesh district, Jalgaon and Dhule became their headquarters respectively. On 10 October 1960, East Khandesh renamed to Jalgaon district. In late 1990s- early 2000s, ruling BJP government renamed Edlabad town to Muktainagar in honour of Muktabai by virtue Edlabad taluka also renamed to Muktainagar taluka.[1][2] In 1911 The Bombay natural history society did a survey in the region, and found that wild pigs and monkeys have their natural habitat in the jungle near Ghodasgaon, Jalgaon. They published the information in a journal.[3] In the second half of 20th century, the district government relocated many villages of the taluka which were situated along the Purna river to avoid dangerous flooding during the rainy season.
Geography[edit]
The taluka is located in the northern part of Maharashtra, and has an area of 638 km2. It is bordered by the Burhanpur district of the Madhya Pradesh state in the north and by the Bhusawal taluka in west. The Purna river flows through it and joins the Tapti River at Changdev. The north-east side of the taluka has large jungle areas where animals such as tigers, peacocks, wild boar and monkeys are local fauna.
The north side also has a large mountain rage, locally called as Satpuda range, which serves as the natural and official border between Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Muktainagar has three major population areas which are Anturli, Kurha and Muktainagar; the latter serves as its headquarters, as the highest populated town. Ghodasgaon and Hartala are two of the highest populated villages in the taluka. Muktainagar has 85 villages such as Pimpri Akaraut, Ruikheda, Taroda, and Dui.[1]
