Requested moves is a process for requesting a change to the title (move) of an article, template or project page on Bharatpedia. For information on renaming files, categories and other items, see § When not to use this page.

Before moving a page or requesting a move, please review the article titling policy and the guidelines on primary topics.

Any autoconfirmed user can move a page using the "Move" option in the editing toolbar. See how to move a page for more information. If you have no reason to expect a dispute over a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or appropriate to do so:

  • Technical reasons may prevent a move. For example, a page may already exist at the target title and require deletion, or the page may be protected from moves. In such cases, see § Requesting technical moves.
  • Requests to revert recent, undiscussed and controversial moves may be made at BP:RM/TR. If the new title has not become the stable title, the undiscussed move may be reverted. If the new title has become the stable title, a requested move may be necessary to determine the appropriate title.
  • A title may be disputed, and discussion may be required to establish consensus. See § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. The requested moves process is not mandatory in every case. An informal discussion on the article's talk page may sometimes help editors reach consensus.
  • A page should not be moved, and a new move discussion should not be opened, when a move request is already open on a talk page. Instead, please participate in the existing discussion.
  • Unregistered users and new users who have not yet become autoconfirmed cannot move pages through the normal page-move interface.

Requests are generally processed after seven days. If consensus supports the move, a reviewer may carry it out after this period. If consensus supports retaining the existing title, the request will be closed as "not moved". If the outcome remains unclear, the request may be relisted to allow further discussion or closed as "no consensus". See Bharatpedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions for further information.

Bharatpedia:Move review may be used to challenge the outcome of a move request, provided that the applicable procedures are followed. If an issue cannot be resolved through discussion on the closer's talk page, a move review may assess whether the closure was reasonable and consistent with the principles and intent of established practice, policies and guidelines.

When not to use this page

Separate procedures apply to moving certain types of pages and to changes that do not involve moving a page:

Undiscussed moves

Autoconfirmed editors may move a page without discussion if all the following conditions are met:

  • No article exists at the proposed target title;
  • There has been no previous discussion about the page title in which an objection to the proposed title was raised; and
  • It is unlikely that another editor would reasonably disagree with the move.

If you disagree with an earlier bold move and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move yourself. If technical restrictions prevent you from reverting it, you may request a technical move.

Move wars are disruptive. If you make a bold move and another editor reverts it, do not move the page again without discussion. Instead, follow the procedures described in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.

Requesting technical moves

Welcome to Requested moves/Technical requests

If you are unable to complete a move for technical reasons, you can request a technical move below. This is the appropriate procedure if you tried to move a page but received an error message such as "You do not have permission to move this page, for the following reasons:..." or "This page could not be moved, for the following reason:...".

If you are here because you want an experienced editor to approve your new article or proposed page rename, this is not the correct place.

To list a technical request: edit the Uncontroversial technical requests subsection, or click the blue button below and insert the following code at the bottom of the list, filling in the page titles and reason:

{{subst:RMassist|current page title|new title|reason=edit summary for the move}}

This automatically inserts a bullet point and includes your signature. Do not edit the article's talk page for an uncontroversial technical request. Use the button below to submit the request.

To request the reversal of a recent undiscussed move: Review the guidelines at BP:RMUM to determine whether the reversal qualifies as uncontroversial. If it does, edit the Requests to revert undiscussed moves subsection, or click the blue button below and insert the following code at the bottom of the list, filling in the page titles and reason:

{{subst:RMassist|current page title|new title|reason=edit summary for the move}}

Please note that, in some cases, administrators or editors with page-mover permissions may determine that a reversal request does not meet the relevant criteria. They may move the request to the contested section or initiate a formal requested move discussion on behalf of the requester if the proposed move may be controversial.

  • If you object to a proposal listed in the uncontroversial technical requests section, move the request to the Contested technical requests section, add a note explaining your objection and sign it with ~~~~. Consider notifying the requester so that they are aware of the objection.
  • If your technical request is contested, or if a contested request remains unanswered, start a requested move discussion on the article's talk page in accordance with the requested move procedure, and remove the request from this page. The simplest method is to use the discussion link associated with the request, save the talk page and then remove the entry from this page. Any automatic removal of contested requests depends on the maintenance tools configured on Bharatpedia.
Administrator assistance required

Use this section when your request requires an administrator. This is usually necessary if the page is fully protected or move protected. See this guide for information on which moves require administrator assistance.

Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves

The discussion process is used for potentially controversial page moves. A move is potentially controversial if either of the following applies:

  • There has been previous debate about the best title for the page.
  • Someone could reasonably disagree with the proposed move.

Use this process whenever there is reason to believe a move may be contested. For technical moves, such as correcting obvious typographical errors, see Requesting technical moves. The technical moves procedure may also be used for uncontroversial moves when the requested title is occupied by an existing page.

Do not create a new move request when one is already open on the same talk page. Instead, contribute to the existing discussion if you wish to propose another alternative. Multiple closed move requests may appear on the same page, but each should have a unique section heading.

Do not create a move request to rename one or more redirects. Redirects cannot be used as current titles in requested moves.

Requesting a single page move

To request a single page move, click the "Add topic" or "New section" tab on the talk page of the page you want to move. Do not add a separate subject or heading. Insert the following code:

{{subst:requested move|New name|reason=Place your rationale for the proposed page name change here. You do not need to add your signature because the template will do so automatically.}}

Replace New name with the requested new title. If you want the discussion to consider multiple possible titles, you may use a question mark instead.

The template automatically creates a heading such as "Requested move [date]" and signs the request for you.

Explain the reasons for the proposed move by referring to applicable naming conventions, policies and guidelines, and provide supporting evidence. If your reasoning includes search engine results, prioritise searches of reliable sources, such as books, news publications and scholarly papers, over general web results.

You do not need to edit the page being discussed. After the request is added to its talk page, the relevant page-move notification should be displayed on the affected page, using the appropriate Bharatpedia template or automated process.

Unlike some other discussion processes, a move nomination does not have to be neutral. Explain your position clearly, use evidence where available, and refer to applicable policies and guidelines, particularly the article title policy and the relevant guidance on disambiguation and primary topics.

Relevant Bharatpedia projects or discussion forums may be notified when a move request could benefit from their input. Notifications should be neutral and intended to invite participation, not to influence the outcome. Avoid excessive or selective notifications that could distort the discussion.

Single-page move on a different talk page

Occasionally, a move request must be made on a talk page other than the talk page of the page being moved. For example, this may be necessary when the page's talk page redirects to a central discussion page.

In such cases, use the following code:

{{subst:requested move
|reason=(the reason for the page move goes here).
|current1=(present title of page to be renamed)
|new1=(proposed title of page)
}}

The unnamed parameter is not used in this format. The current1 and new1 parameters identify the existing title and the proposed new title.

Requesting multiple page moves

A single template may be used to request multiple related page moves. Create the request on the talk page of one of the affected pages.

The following example shows a request involving three pages. For two pages, omit the lines for current3 and new3. For additional pages, add further numbered pairs of currentN and newN parameters.

Before requesting a large number of related moves, consider whether a naming convention should be discussed and changed first. If so, raise the matter on the relevant Bharatpedia policy or discussion page.

To request multiple page moves, edit the bottom of the selected talk page without adding a new heading, and insert the following code:

{{subst:requested move
| current1 = Current title of page 1 (may be omitted when the discussion is hosted on a page proposed to be moved)
| new1 = New title for page 1
| current2 = Current title of page 2
| new2 = New title for page 2
| current3 = Current title of page 3
| new3 = New title for page 3
| reason = Explain the proposed changes, referring to applicable naming conventions, policies and guidelines, and provide supporting evidence. You do not need to add your signature because the template will do so automatically.
}}

For example, to propose moving the pages Example and Example 2, place the template on the talk page of one of the affected pages and provide the current and proposed titles for both pages. The discussion for all affected pages should take place on that same talk page.

Do not sign the request separately with ~~~~, because the template signs it automatically. Otherwise, two signatures may appear. Do not skip numbers in the parameter pairs.

The appropriate notification mechanism should inform participants on the other affected pages that a move discussion is taking place and direct them to the central discussion. All discussion relating to the requested moves should remain in that one location.

When a multiple-move discussion is hosted on a page that is itself proposed to be moved, the current1 parameter for that page may be omitted if the template can determine its current title automatically. If the discussion is hosted on a separate project or discussion page, specify the current and proposed titles of every affected page.

To change an existing single-page move request into a multiple-page move request, update the relevant dated request template with the following parameters:

  • |multiple=yes
  • |current1=Current title of page 1
  • |new1=New title of page 1
  • |current2=Current title of page 2
  • |new2=New title of page 2
  • |currentN=Current title of page N
  • |newN=New title of page N

Here, N represents additional pages to be moved. Follow the parameter syntax required by the local template, including any required trailing pipe.

Request all associated moves explicitly

List every page whose title you want changed. If moving one page affects the title or purpose of another page, specify the proposed title for each affected page.

For example, if you propose moving Cricket (disambiguation) to Cricket because you believe the sport should not be the primary topic, you must also specify the proposed title for the page currently titled Cricket.

The request could list:

  • Cricket → Cricket (sport)
  • Cricket (disambiguation) → Cricket

If you do not propose a new title for the page that currently occupies the target title, it may be difficult for participants to assess the complete proposal. A request that only lists:

  • Cricket (disambiguation) → Cricket

is incomplete unless the intention is to decide the best title for the pages through discussion. In that case, the request may be clarified to ask participants to determine the appropriate title.

If a disambiguation page prevents a requested move, the proposal may include renaming that page by adding (disambiguation) to its title. For example:

  • Example → Example (disambiguation)

Commenting on a requested move

All Bharatpedia editors are welcome to participate in discussions concerning requested page moves. To ensure that discussions remain constructive, transparent and consistent with Bharatpedia's editorial standards, contributors should follow these practices:

  • When recommending a particular outcome, use Support or Oppose in bold. This can be done by placing three single quotation marks on either side of the word, for example, '''Support'''.
  • Add each comment or recommendation on a new bulleted line, beginning with an asterisk (*), and sign it by adding ~~~~ at the end. Replies to other editors should be threaded and indented using additional asterisks.
  • Review the article before making a recommendation. Opinions should not be based solely on statements made by other participants. Examining the article's edit history may provide useful context. Editors should also read earlier comments, recommendations and previous move discussions, as these may contain relevant arguments, evidence or background information.
  • Any personal, professional or other interests connected with the subject should be disclosed in accordance with Bharatpedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI.

When participating in a requested move discussion, editors should also consider the following:

  • Familiarise yourself with Bharatpedia's article titling policy at Bharatpedia:Article titles.
  • Other relevant guidelines include Bharatpedia:Disambiguation, applicable naming conventions and the Manual of Style.
  • Discussions are intended to establish consensus rather than determine an outcome through voting. Recommendations should therefore be supported by clear reasoning and relevant evidence.
  • Explain how the proposed title complies with, or conflicts with, Bharatpedia's policies and guidelines. Simply claiming that a title follows or violates a policy is not sufficient.
  • Submitting a move request ordinarily indicates that the nominator supports the proposed change. Nominators should therefore avoid repeating their support in a separate bulleted comment.[lower-alpha 1]
  • Avoid making contradictory recommendations. If your position changes during the discussion, strike through your earlier recommendation using <s> and </s>, remove its bold formatting and clearly indicate your revised position. For example: "• Support Oppose".

Editors may reasonably reach different conclusions when assessing a proposed move. However, arguments supported by Bharatpedia's policies, guidelines and reliable evidence should carry greater weight than unsupported opinions.

Where a participant offers an argument without explaining its relevance to the applicable policies or guidelines, other editors may encourage them to provide a clearer, policy-based explanation. Repeatedly expressing unsupported opinions, relying on proof by assertion, or disregarding applicable content guidelines may become disruptive.

If such behaviour continues despite reasonable attempts to resolve the matter through discussion, editors should consider the procedures described at Bharatpedia:Dispute resolution.

Closing a requested move

Any uninvolved editor in good standing may close a requested move discussion, provided they are familiar with the relevant procedures and can assess the discussion impartially.

Before closing a discussion, editors should consult the closing instructions and the simple guide to closing requested move discussions.

Requested move discussions should ordinarily remain open for at least seven days (168 hours). This allows sufficient time for interested editors to review the proposal, examine relevant policies and sources, and contribute to the discussion.

In certain circumstances, a move request may be closed before the usual discussion period has elapsed. These include:

  • When the editor who proposed the move chooses to withdraw the request and no other participant has expressed support for the proposed move.
  • When the request was submitted through block evasion and no other editor has supported the proposed move.
  • When related move discussions need to be consolidated into a single discussion to avoid duplication and ensure a consistent outcome.
  • When the request substantially repeats a recently concluded discussion with a clear outcome, or when an established restriction or moratorium on further move requests applies to the page.
  • When the outcome is sufficiently clear from the discussion and applicable policies that keeping the request open would serve no useful purpose.

A closing editor should assess the strength of the arguments, their consistency with Bharatpedia's policies and guidelines, and the consensus established through discussion. The number of supporting or opposing comments alone should not determine the outcome.

Relisting a requested move

Relisting a requested move discussion brings it back to the current day's list and removes it from the backlog, allowing additional editors an opportunity to participate.

The decision to relist a discussion should generally be made by an experienced, uninvolved editor who has reviewed the discussion but considers the available input insufficient to determine a clear outcome.

As a general practice, a requested move discussion should not be relisted more than once before being properly closed.[lower-alpha 2]

Editors who relist a discussion that has already been relisted, or one that has received substantial participation, should provide a brief explanation of why the existing discussion is insufficient for closure.

Although there is no general prohibition against participating in a discussion after relisting it, doing so may raise concerns about impartiality, particularly where the relisting editor subsequently advocates a particular outcome. Such conduct may be regarded as an inappropriate supervote.

An editor who intends to relist a discussion and then participate in it should be prepared to explain why their involvement is appropriate.

Relisting should be carried out using {{subst:RM relist}}, which automatically adds the relisting editor's signature. The template must be placed at the very end of the original move request, after the nominator's signature and any signatures from earlier relistings.

Once a relisted discussion reaches a sufficiently clear outcome, it may be closed in accordance with the closing instructions. There is no mandatory additional waiting period following a relisting.

Where a discussion has received little recent participation, or where further input from editors familiar with the subject would be useful, consider publicising the discussion more widely.

For example, relevant WikiProjects may be notified using {{RM notification}}. WikiProject banners displayed on the talk page hosting the move request may help identify appropriate projects to contact.

Notifications should be neutral and should invite participation without encouraging editors to support a particular outcome.

Notes

  1. ↑ An editor making a procedural nomination without necessarily supporting the proposed move may add a separate comment explaining their position. Additional information, including reliable sources, may also be provided in a separate bullet if including it in the nomination would make the initial statement unnecessarily lengthy. The complete nomination statement is displayed in the list of requested moves on this page.
  2. ↑ In exceptional circumstances, a discussion may be relisted more than once if further participation is considered necessary to establish consensus.
