Miscellany for deletion (MfD) is the central discussion area where Bharatpedia editors decide what should be done with problematic pages that are not covered by other specialised deletion processes. Items listed here are typically discussed for seven days; afterwards an administrator closes the discussion and either deletes the page, keeps it, or applies another outcome supported by the consensus.

Introduction[edit source]

Pages that belong in the main article namespace are handled at Bharatpedia:Articles for deletion. The other specialised deletion areas are:

MfD therefore handles pages in namespaces such as Help:, Portal:, MediaWiki:, Bharatpedia: (project namespace), User:, and the various Talk: namespaces.

The undeletion of pages deleted after an MfD discussion—and debates about whether an MfD close was proper—belong at Bharatpedia:Deletion review.

Before nominating a non-mainspace page[edit source]

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Nominating a policy or guideline page, or one of the deletion discussion areas (or their subpages), is normally considered disruptive; such discussions are usually closed early. MfD is not a forum for revoking policy.
  • Nominating a proposed policy or guideline that is still under active discussion is generally frowned upon. If you oppose a proposal, discuss it on the proposal's talk page, or be bold and improve it so that it gains consensus. Even a failed proposal is often worth keeping as a historical record.
  • However, if a proposal is clearly not serious or is itself disruptive (for example, "Proposal to reject proposal X"), it may be nominated for deletion.
  • Nominating another user's page without first discussing it with that user—on their talk page or on the talk page of the page in question—is generally frowned upon, except when the user is permanently banned.
  • The Bharatpedia: namespace is the project namespace, not the policy namespace.
  • Ordinary editing that does not require administrator tools—such as merging or renaming—can often resolve the problem without deletion.
  • If a page is simply in the wrong namespace (for example, an article sitting in the Bharatpedia namespace), move it and, if necessary, list the leftover redirect at Bharatpedia:Redirects for deletion.

How to list pages for deletion[edit source]

First, confirm that you are in the right area by checking the list of deletion discussion venues above. To list a page for deletion, follow this three-step process. Replace PageName with the full name of the page, including its namespace.

Step I. Place the MfD tag on the page you are nominating.

{{subst:mfd|reason=Your reason for nomination. ~~~~}}
Save the page. The tag will display a notice and create a red link to the discussion subpage.

Step II. Create the discussion subpage.

Click the red link that appears in the notice (it will look like this page's entry). On the empty page, insert:
{{subst:mfd2|pg=PageName|text=Your reason for nomination. ~~~~}}
Save the subpage. This creates the discussion page where other editors can comment.

Step III. Transclude the discussion on the main MfD log.

Go to Bharatpedia:Miscellany for deletion and, under the current date heading, insert:
{{subst:mfd3|pg=PageName}}
Save the page. The discussion is now live and will be listed on the MfD log.

Notes:

  • You must be logged in to complete Steps II and III.
  • If the page has been nominated before, use the {{mfdx}} variant and add the nomination number.
  • Notify the page creator (and, if different, the user in whose userspace the page sits) on their talk page with {{subst:Mfd notice|PageName}}.
  • Multiple related pages may be bundled into a single nomination; see the Bundling section below.

Bundling nominations[edit source]

If several related pages should be discussed together, list the primary page as above, then add the additional pages to the same discussion subpage using {{subst:mfd2|pg=PageName|text=...}} for each, or place a joint rationale on the primary discussion page and add {{mfd}} tags to the others that link to the shared discussion. Keep bundled nominations to a reasonable number so that the discussion remains manageable.

Discussion and closure[edit source]

  • Discussions normally remain open for seven days from the date of listing.
  • Any editor may comment; comments should be signed with four tildes (~~~~).
  • An administrator closes the discussion. The closing administrator uses {{subst:mfd top|result=Outcome summary. ~~~~}} at the top of the discussion and {{subst:mfd bottom}} at the bottom.
  • Possible outcomes include delete, keep, merge, redirect, userfy, or no consensus (which normally defaults to keeping the page).
  • After closing, the administrator performs the action (or notes that no action is needed) and removes the {{mfd}} tag from the page if it is kept.

How to list a page[edit source]

Follow the three-step process on the main MfD page. In short:

  1. Place {{subst:mfd}} on the page you are nominating.
  2. Create the discussion subpage using {{subst:mfd2}}.
  3. Transclude it here using {{subst:mfd3}} under the current date heading below.
