Electric Loco Shed, Vijayawada is a motive power depot performing locomotive maintenance and repair facility for electric locomotives of the Indian Railways, located at Vijayawada of the South Central Railway zone in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is one of the three electric loco sheds in the South Central Railway zone the others being at Lallaguda (LGD) and Kazipet (KZJ).

History

After South Central Railway set a deadline to eliminate all steam locomotive operations by 1990, a push was given towards establishing electric locomotion as the primary motive power, and the steam locomotive sheds were decommissioned.^[1] To meet the needs of exponentially increasing rail traffic on the new continuous broad-gauge lines from Andhra Pradesh to rest of India with the completion of electrification of the Vijayawada-Chennai line, the Vijayawada was selected by Indian Railways for a new electric locomotive shed.^[2]

In 1980 Electric loco Shed Vijayawada was inaugurated with a project of 100 loco holding. The first loco of the shed was a WAM-4 #21217. It also formerly homed WAG-1 locomotives. ^[3]

Operations

Being one of the three electric engine sheds in South Central Railway, various major and minor maintenance schedules of electric locomotives are carried out here. It has the sanctioned capacity of 175 engine units. Beyond the operating capacity, this shed houses a total of 246 engine units including 63 WAP-4, 28 WAP-7, 43 WAG-5, 71 WAG-7 and 41 WAG-9 units. It also formerly housed a few WAM-4 locomotives temporarily.^[4] Electric loco Shed, Vijayawada is now housing a large fleet of WAP-4 in Indian Railways and it caters to many long-distance electric trains.^[5]^[6]

Like all locomotive sheds, BZA does regular maintenance, overhaul and repair including painting and washing of locomotives. It not only attends to locomotives housed at BZA but to ones coming in from other sheds as well. It has four pit lines for loco repair. Locomotives of Vijayawada ELS along with Lallaguda ELS were the regular links for all trains running through Andhra Pradesh when widespread electrification of railway lines started in South Central Railways. It handled prestigious trains like Krishna Express, East Coast Express (India), Vijayawada Jan Shatabdi Express and many more.

Livery and Markings

BZA based locomotives have a standardised livery all over India. BZA has its own markings on the locomotives. The shed mainly uses sticker marks which is present on loco's front and back body.
