Saath Nibhaana Saathiya (transl. Stand by Me, Partner) is an Indian Hindi-language television series produced by Rashmi Sharma under Rashmi Sharma Telefilms.^[4] It premiered on 4 May 2010 on Star Plus and became one of the longest-running television series in India.^[5] The series starred Giaa Manek (later replaced by Devoleena Bhattacharjee), Rucha Hasabnis, Rupal Patel, Mohammad Nazim, Vishal Singh, and Loveleen Kaur Sasan.^[6]

The series followed the lives of the members of the Modi family, exploring the morals and values of a typical Gujarati joint family. Initially, it focused on cousins Gopi and Rashi and their lives in the Modi house after marrying the Modis' sons, Ahem and Jigar, respectively. After a time leap, the series focused on Gopi's daughters, Meera and Vidya. A further leap focused on Ramakant, Gopi's son, and Sita.^[7] The storyline frequently skipped forward in time: a year in June 2013,^[8] eight years in February 2014,^[9] ten years in February 2015,^[10] four years in May 2016,^[11] and three months in March 2017. The series ended on 24 July 2017, completing 2,182 episodes.^[12]^[13]

The second season of the series, Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2, premiered on 19 October 2020 on Star Plus, featuring Devoleena Bhattacharjee, Rupal Patel, and Mohammad Nazim in cameo roles, and starring Sneha Jain and Harsh Nagar (later replaced by Gautam Singh Vig) as protagonists.^[14]

Plot

Gopi is an orphan who lives with her aunt Urmila Shah, uncle Jeetu Shah, and cousin Rashi. Kokila Modi, belonging to an affluent Gujarati family, decides to have her son Ahem Modi marry Gopi. Urmila and Rashi plot to have Rashi marry Jigar, another son of the Modi family. Soon, Ahem and Gopi, and Jigar and Rashi, get married. Initially, Gopi faces many hardships, as Kokila is strict, and Ahem rejects her because of her illiteracy. Rashi, aided by her mother, Urmila, actively plots against her cousin to sabotage her success. Ahem's sister, Kinjal, is married to Urmila's nephew, Dhaval Desai. Over time, Kokila grows closer to Gopi but does not support her decision to study further. However, recognizing her efforts, Ahem gradually accepts his relationship with Gopi and helps her through her studies. Eventually, Rashi and Urmila's plot, which led the former to marry Jigar, is unveiled. The Modi family estranges Rashi; however, as she shows signs of redemption, she is forgiven and accepted in the family.

Soon, Gopi has a daughter, Meera, while Rashi has twin sons, Sahir and Samar. Gopi's long-lost parents, Madhu and Jayantilal, return and reunite with Gopi and her sister, Radha. Radha marries Kinjal's ex-boyfriend, Umang Mehta, who is murdered by his first wife, Tripti. Tripti blames Gopi for Umang's death; Radha believes her. However, Kokila collaborates with Gopi and Rashi to learn the truth and later reveals Umang and Tripti's intentions to Radha, thereby sentencing Tripti to eight years of imprisonment. Gopi discovers that she is again pregnant. However, Tripti again turns Radha against Gopi. When the family is out for a picnic, Radha schemes to cause an accident to kill Meera, which results in Gopi accidentally slipping and dropping baby Meera into the river. Kokila holds Gopi responsible for Meera's death, and a guilt-ridden Gopi leaves the Modi house.

8 years later

Gopi raises her second daughter, Vidya, single-handedly. Kokila decides to have Ahem marry Radha. On the day of the marriage, Rashi finds Gopi; with the help of Samar, Sahir, Pappu, and Vidya, they plan to remarry Ahem and Gopi. Their plan is successful, and Gopi reveals to the family that Vidya is her daughter with Ahem. Kokila learns that Meera is alive but was ill-treated by Radha and grew up as an orphan in a temple. Kokila decides to expose them, but Tripti causes an accident that results in Kokila having partial memory loss. Gopi and Ahem bring a young girl, Gauri, to the house; she turns out to be Meera. Kokila regains her memory, and the whole family is reunited after Radha's crimes are revealed; she is imprisoned along with Tripti for trying to kill Kokila and Meera.

Rashi's maternal cousin, Paridhi, enters the Modi house. Rashi sacrifices her life to save Gopi from Paridhi's obsessed colleague, Anurag Joshi. Jigar goes into depression because of Rashi's demise. However, soon after, he marries Paridhi due to family pressure. Radha returns, tricks Jigar into sleeping with her, and becomes pregnant. She delivers a daughter who is named after Rashi and threatens the Modis that she will kill the child. Realizing that Radha will never reform, and to save Rashi Jr., Gopi kills Radha by repeatedly stabbing her with a trishul. Gopi is then sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment.

10 years later

Gopi is released from jail after her sentence is reduced by four years. She is shocked to learn that Kokila no longer lives in the Modi house and is a maid at the house of Urmila, who is feigning mental illness. Paridhi refuses to foster Rashi Jr. and does not let her stay at the Modi house. Ahem has broken all ties with the Modis and lives in Bandra, Mumbai, with Meera, Vidya, and a woman named Mansi Raheja, who is the caretaker of Meera and Vidya. He runs a bakery called MV (named after Meera and Vidya). Kinjal has separated from Dhaval after an argument, which caused Urmila's feigned memory loss, and lives at the Modi house. Gopi's mother, Madhu, escapes after failing to take Rashi Jr. with her.

Gopi, Jigar, and Kokila travel to Mumbai to bring Ahem, Meera, and Vidya back home. While Vidya is sweet-natured and kind, Meera has grown into a spoiled and ill-mannered young woman. Meera and Vidya refuse to accept Gopi as their mother, and Ahem wants nothing to do with her. However, after many failed attempts, the family is reunited. Vidya's marriage is arranged with Shravan, whose grandmother, Gaura, is Kokila's childhood friend. Gaura seeks revenge on Kokila for her brother's death and secretly has Meera marry her son, Dharam. Madhu returns with her adopted daughter, Sona, seeking revenge against the Modis for Radha's death. While trying to stab Kokila, Madhu accidentally stabs Gopi. Guilt-ridden after being slapped by Sona, she flees, jumps into a lake, and dies. Gopi survives the attack, and Sahir (Rashi and Jigar's son) marries Sona. Paridhi does not accept this marriage. Dharam and Meera gradually fall in love and remarry. But their happiness is short-lived as Ahem dies in a car accident.

5 years later

Gopi has been depressed since Ahem's demise and has not spoken in years. Paridhi has expelled Sahir and Sona from the Modi mansion and had Samar marry a rich woman, Monica. Baa, Chirag, Hetal, and Parag have moved to America for Baa's treatment, while Dhaval, Kinjal, and Pappu have moved to London. Vidya has a four-year-old daughter with Shravan named Priyal. Kokila arranges Gopi's marriage to her therapist and doctor, Krishna Raheja, who turns out to be Mansi's brother and seeks vengeance on Gopi for separating Mansi and Ahem. Soon, Gopi and Kokila meet Ahem's look-alike, Jaggi, and request him to save Gopi from Krishna's evil plans. Later, it is revealed that Jaggi is Parag and Urvashi's illegitimate son.

Gopi learns from her dying friend, Antara, that she gave birth to a son and that Vidya is not Gopi's daughter. Antara had cheated Gopi by swapping her daughter with Gopi's son. Gopi's long-lost son, Ramakant, has now grown into a spoiled and selfish young man. As the story proceeds, Ramakant promises to marry Sita, a young traditional girl living with the Modis. However, he then marries Sameera, who is the daughter of Anita (Ahem's ex-girlfriend). After Anita's death, Sameera vows to avenge the Modis. She traps herself in an unbreakable glass container with the help of Pinku and Daimaa during Ramakant's (also known as Ricky) absence. Kokila nearly dies saving Sameera. The next day, Sameera calls the police on her birthday and gets Gopi and Kokila arrested. To save Kokila and Gopi, the Modis give Sita a makeover as "Sia". Sia arrives at a fashion show that Sameera is attending and makes Sameera, Pinku, Daimaa, and Ramakant believe that she is not Sita. A few days later, upon uncovering the truth about the trap set for Gopi and Kokila and under the pressure of Sia, Ramakant goes to visit his mother. On his way, he is trapped by Sameera and Pinku and nearly killed in a car bombing, but Sia saves him. Later, upon visiting the house, Gopi presumes Ramakant is dead and goes into shock, falling into a coma. Sia continues hiding Ramakant from the Modis and Sameera. The truth is revealed when Sameera is caught and confesses the truth to the Modis. Later, the Modis arrange Sita's marriage to Ramakant, who reforms himself before marrying.

Production

Casting

In May 2012, lead actress Giaa Manek signed to appear on the reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa on a rival network, Colors TV.^[16] Saath Nibhaana Saathiya producers objected, noting that Manek was under contract with their network and that doing a reality series could tarnish her onscreen image as a soft-spoken character.^[17] The producers took their complaints to the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers (AMPTPP) and to Cine and TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) for arbitration. The members of CINTAA conducted meetings with Manek and asked her to quit the reality show. However, Manek declined, and Star replaced her with Devoleena Bhattacharjee.^[17]

In January 2014, Rucha Hasabnis, playing the role of Rashi, confirmed her plans to quit the series any time during that year.^[18] However, when she decided to quit acting, the producers ended her character by getting her killed in the series.^[19]

In September 2015, Lovey Sasan, playing Paridhi, quit the series as she did not want to play the role of a mother.^[20] However, after some time, when the makers approached her, she agreed and returned in March 2016.^[21]

In May 2016, Mohammad Nazim, who played Ahem, quit the show because a member of the production crew stated:^[22]

Since the existing key actors aired their reservations about playing grandparents, the creatives had no option but to put the time leap on hold. Something drastic needed to be done to liven up the storyline. After brainstorming, the best idea seemed to bump off Ahem's character, so a new man could be introduced in protagonist Gopi's life to take the story forward

Khalid Siddiqui was cast opposite Bhattacharjee as Krishna in May 2016.^[23] As their storyline led to a decrease in ratings, in July 2016, Nazim was made to re-enter the series as Jaggi, a look-alike of Ahem's illegitimate twin half-brother. The story now focused on him and Bhattacharjee.^[24]

Filming

Set in Gujarat, the series was mainly filmed on sets in Mira Road near Mumbai. The exterior of the Modi Mansion shown in the episodes was filmed at Shubham Villa on Madh Island.^[25]^[26] In December 2012, a sequence was filmed in Bhuj, Gujarat, for ten days.^[27]

Some episodes were filmed in foreign locations, including Switzerland in May 2011 and Singapore in February and March 2017.^[28]^[29] Initially, the United States was considered as a location, but it was replaced with Singapore due to budget constraints.^[30]

Reboot series

On 26 May 2021, Shoonya Square Productions announced a reboot of Saathiya with original cast members, including Giaa Manek, Mohammad Nazim, Rupal Patel, and Vandana Vithlani, reprising their roles.^[31]^[32] Along with these actors, there were several new characters, with the similar concept of a Gujarati joint family.^[33] The show aired on Star Bharat, the sister channel of StarPlus.^[34] In early July 2021, the title was finalized as Tera Mera Saath Rahe.^[35] On 25 July 2021, the first promo was released featuring Giaa Manek and Rupal Patel.^[36] The reboot series aired from 16 August 2021 to 17 June 2022.

Dubbed versions

The series was dubbed in Telugu as Kodala Kodala Koduku Pellamaa on Star Maa and in Vietnamese as Âm Mưu Và Tình Yêu on THVL 1.^[37]^[38]^[39] It was dubbed in Indonesian and aired under the title Gopi (according to the main character) from 15 September 2016 to 19 April 2017.^[40]^[41] In Bulgaria, the series was dubbed in Bulgarian as Остани с мен on Diema Family.^[42]^[43]^[44] The series was dubbed in Turkish as Masum on Kanal 7, where it aired in March 2020 and ended on 30 July 2021. It was also broadcast in Romanian as Suflete Tradate on National TV.^[45]^[46]^[47] Saath Nibhaana Saathiya aired in Pakistan on Urdu 1 and H Now Entertainment but was later discontinued due to a ban on Indian content.^[48] It also aired in Sri Lanka, dubbed in Sinhala as Mage Sanda Obai on Swarnavahini.^[49]^[50]

Criticism

Hindustan Times praised the series for casting newcomers; however, it criticized the series, stating, "The loud clothes and backward settings induce a pukey sensation. There's serious amount of overacting involved by the actors, whether they play protagonists or mums and dads. It’s too old fashioned and boring".^[52]

Ratings

Despite low viewership in May 2010, the series' viewership increased gradually, and it eventually became one of the top Hindi television shows of its time.^[4] In November 2010, it occupied the top position with a 5.3 TVR.^[53] As the ratings increased, it was praised by Hindustan Times for redefining the 7:00 pm (IST) slot as prime time.^[54]

In the first week of 2011, it was the most-watched Hindi GEC (general entertainment channel) show with a 6.3 TVR.^[55] In the week of 26 March 2011, it occupied the fourth position with a 5 TVR.^[56] In week 13 of 2011, it was at the third position with a 5.31 TVR.^[57] In the week of 9 April 2011, it was at the second position with a 4.96 TVR.^[58] In the week of 3 September 2011, it topped the charts with a 6.3 TVR.^[59] In week 43 of 2011, it was at the top position with a 6.5 TVR.^[60] In December, the series achieved its highest rating of 7.58 TVR, becoming the most-watched Hindi GEC show in that week for that specific timeslot.^[61]^[62] In the week of 3 December 2011, it maintained its top position, garnering a 6.26 TVR.^[63] Overall, it was the most-watched Indian Hindi television show of 2011.^[64]

It maintained its first position in the first week of 2012, garnering a 6 TVR.^[65] From 7 to 13 May 2012, it occupied the first position with a 5+ TVR, surpassing Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, which had held the position the previous week.^[66] In the week of 21 July 2012, it was at the sixth position with a 2.9 TVR.^[67] In the last six months of 2012, ratings dipped, averaging between 3+ and 6 TVR, though it remained one of the most-watched Hindi GEC shows.^[68] In mid-December 2012, it was at the third position with a 4.3 TVR.^[69]

In June 2013, it was the sixth most-watched Hindi GEC fiction show with a TVR of 2.6.^[70] In weeks 43 and 44, it garnered 7.4 and 7.5 million viewers, respectively.^[71] Overall, in 2013, it became the seventh most-watched Indian Hindi television program with an average viewership of 6.4 million and a peak of 8.7 million.^[72]

In week 4 of 2014, it garnered a rating of 4.6 TVR.^[73] In week 49, it was in the third position with a 3.9 TVR.^[74] Overall, it continued to maintain its position in the weekly list of the top 10 Hindi GECs during 2014.^[75]

In the second week of July 2015, it was at the top position.^[76] In week 32 of 2015, it was the most-watched show with a 4 TVR, while the previous week, it shared the first position with Kumkum Bhagya, garnering a 3.8 TVR.^[77]^[78] From weeks 33 to 35, it garnered 3.6, 3.4, and 3.6 TVR, maintaining its position in the top five shows.^[79] In the second week of September 2015, it was at the second position with a 4.3 TVR.^[80] In 2015, it maintained its weekly position in the top ten watched Hindi GEC shows, ranging between 3.5 and 4 TVR.^[81]

In week 4 of 2016, it garnered a TRP of 3.5, occupying the third position.^[82] In the week ending 29 April 2016, it was at the third position with 10.51 million impressions, and the following week at the fourth position with 10.25 million impressions.^[83]^[84] In week 26, it was at the third position with 9.386 million impressions.^[85] In week 35, it occupied the second position with 10.68 million impressions.^[86] In week 41, it was at the third position with 10.074 million impressions.^[87]

In week 4 of 2017, it was at the seventh position in urban areas.^[88] Maintaining its position in the top ten programs for weeks after the premiere, viewership dropped in 2017, with the series moving out of the top ten Hindi GECs. In week 27 of 2017, it garnered 6.7 million impressions and occupied the twelfth position.^[89]

The rerun of the series on Star Utsav during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 became one of the top five most-watched Hindi GEC shows.^[90]

In popular culture

A clip from an episode where the lead character Gopi (Giaa Manek) washes a laptop went viral and was subjected to trolling and criticism.^[91]

On 21 August 2020, music composer Yashraj Mukhate uploaded a remix video featuring characters Kokila (Rupal Patel), Rashi (Rucha Hasabnis), and Gopi (Giaa Manek). It added a rap beat to a scene where Kokila scolds Rashi for putting an empty pressure cooker on the stove without the chana (chickpeas).^[92] The video quickly garnered over 16.7 million views on Instagram and 95 million views on YouTube as of 31 December 2025, and memes related to the remix also trended.^[93]^[94]

Sia arrives at a fashion show that Sameera is attending and makes Sameera, Pinku, Daimaa, and Ramakant believe that she is not Sita. A few days later, upon uncovering the truth about the trap set for Gopi and Kokila and under the pressure of Sia, Ramakant goes to visit his mother. On his way, he is trapped by Sameera and Pinku and nearly killed in a car bombing, but Sia saves him. Later, upon visiting the house, Gopi presumes Ramakant is dead and goes into shock, falling into a coma. Sia continues hiding Ramakant from the Modis and Sameera. The truth is revealed when Sameera is caught and confesses the truth to the Modis. Later, the Modis arrange Sita's marriage to Ramakant, who reforms himself before marrying.
