Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2 (transl. Stay together, my love 2) is an Indian television drama series produced by Rashmi Sharma Telefilms, that airs on Star Plus and digitally streams on Disney+Hotstar. The show premiered on 19 October 2020, replacing Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke. Based on Star Jalsha's Bengali series Ke Apon Ke Por, it is an official sequel to the long-running TV series Saath Nibhaana Saathiya. It stars Sneha Jain and Harsh Nagar.

Plot

Kokila Parag Modi, the strict matriarch of the Modi family decides to visit her long-lost brother, Praful Desai, who is a famous banker in Surat. Kokila's daughter-in-law, Gopi Modi was initially married to Ahem Modi, Kokila's elder son. After Ahem's demise, Gopi married Jaggi, Kokila's step-son. After visiting the Desai family, Gopi starts feeling Ahem's presence and finds someone looking like him. Meanwhile, the Desais are a beautiful joint family consisting of Praful Desai, his wife Jamuna, their children Pankaj, Chetan, Anant, Hiral and Tia, their daughters-in-law Hema and Kanak and their kind-hearted house-helper, Gehna, who was brought home after her father saved Praful's life. After many ups and downs, Gehna learns that Ahem Modi is still alive and reunites Gopi with Ahem and the Modis leave back for Rajkot.

Anant, the Desai family's youngest son returns from the US after his studies and introduces the Desais to his girlfriend, Radhika, who soon becomes friends with Gehna. Sagar, Hema's brother, attempts to molest Gehna but Anant comes to her rescue and brutally thrashes him. While Kanak, Hema, Chetan, Pankaj and Hiral are desperate for Praful's wealth, Gehna wants the family to stay happy. Seeing all the hurdles faced by Gehna, Anant and Radhika decide to get her married. On the marriage day, Jamuna asks Radhika to bring her parents over to the Desai Mansion where she gets stuck on the way back. At the mandap, Gehna and the Desais realise that Gehna's fiancé was cheating the Desais for their wealth, which leaves Gehna heartbroken. Praful, who feels helpless, suffers a panic-attack and after he regains his conscious, asks Anant to marry Gehna to save her dignity. Anant, with a heavy heart, forgets the promise he made to Radhika and marries Gehna.

While Radhika leaves heartbroken, Kanak and Hema leave no stone unturned to ruin Gehna's marital life but with Anant and the Desais blessings and support, she overcomes them all and the family decides that she is worthy of being a daughter-in-law of the Desai household. Furious, Kanak hatches more plans and declares a partition of the house. Helpless, Praful and Jamuna allow it and want to see how selfish their children can be. Soon, Chetan and Pankaj realise that they love the Desais and that they can't be away from them, thus forgetting the partition.

Anant is offered a new job and his boss asks him to take care of a confidential file, which holds the security of the country. Anant trusts Gehna and gives her the file which she locks in her cupboard. Vengeful, Sagar and Kanak steal the file and hide it, putting both Gehna and Anant at risk. Anant's company threatens him to throw him out of the job while Jamuna taunts Gehna, asking her to find the file. Soon, Gehna realises that Sagar was the one behind it. Smartly, she intoxicates Sagar and makes him blurt out where he hid the file. Gehna finds it, reaches the court in time, and saves Anant from being executed and gets Sagar behind bars. Hema vows to ruin Gehna's life for sending Sagar to jail.

Soon, Gehna confesses her love for Anant, but Anant rejects her proposal and tells her that he has only loved Radhika and can only respect her. Paresh and Tia suggest her to start ignoring Anant to gain his love, but that too eventually fails. Anant admits Gehna to a college to help her achieve her dream of becoming a lawyer. Kanak registers herself for the "Mrs. Surat Beauty Competition" and after being humiliated by the former, Gehna decides to participate and eventually, even after traps set by Sagar and Kanak, she wins the competition and also wins Hema's heart after standing up for her after she was body shamed.

Radhika, who is now married, returns to win Anant's heart once again. She teams up with Kanak to go against Gehna. Radhika comes up with a plan to make Anant believe that her husband, Vineet Virani, tortures her and physically abuses her. Worried, Anant brings Radhika home and Radhika is elated that she gets her place back in the Desai House.

Sagar, who returns to kidnap Gehna, meets with an accident and loses his memory. After going to the hospital, the Desais realise that Sagar is mentally ill and has the maturity and sense of a five-year-old child and that he thinks Gehna is his mother. With a heavy heart, Gehna brings Sagar home and looks after him much to Anant's anger. Kanak disguises as Gehna with a mask and brutally beats up Sagar, making him believe that Gehna beat him. Scared, Sagar tells the family which infuriates Hema who once again sides with Kanak. As Radhika pays Kanak and Hema 25 lakhs to help her, Gehna learns about Radhika's intentions and the lies she told Anant about Vineet.

When Gehna tells Anant, he realises that she is right and that Radhika has been lying and furiously leaves the room, making Gehna believe that Anant mistrusts her. Anant pretends to side with Radhika in an attempt to get her to confess her lies. Together Anant and Gehna expose Radhika and throw her out of the Desai Mansion. Furious, Radhika tells the family about Kanak's true nature but the Desais don't believe her. Radhika calls Kanak and tells her to return the 25 lakhs as she failed to reunite Anant and Radhika. She blackmails Kanak and tells her that police will arrest her if she fails to return the money in time. Scared of going to jail, Kanak and Hema attempt to rob Jamuna's jewels to sell. However, Gehna catches them and decides to expose them to the family. When she tries to, she learns that Kanak and Hema have left the house and when they return, the two of them accept their mistakes and pretend that they have realised it. Kanak and Hema tell Gehna about Radhika's demand for the money and Gehna decides to help them, against Anant's wish. She joins an advertisement agency to get 25 lakhs and saves Kanak and Hema from going to jail. Radhika warns Gehna about Hema and Kanak's evil intentions, but she ignores them.

When Kanak tries to start liking Gehna, Hema instigates her saying that she joined the advertisement just to show Kanak that she is better than her at modelling. Furious, Kanak and Hema visit the ad agency, disguised as models and lie to Amrish Mehta, the manager, that Gehna is a cheat and she takes an advance amount and then throws tantrums and refuses to do the advertisement. Soon, Gehna's shooting starts and she finds out that the shoot she is doing is a soap advertisement and she refuses to where the short skirt given to her. Amrish gets furious and misbehaves with her. Anant reaches there in time and slaps him for harassing Gehna. The manager says that Gehna will have to pay the agency 25 lakhs in five days and that if she doesn't, she will be arrested. Unable to return the 25 lakhs, Shivangi, Amrish's sister, offers help for Gehna and tells her that if she and her family make a hundred gowns for her, she will pay Amrish the amount from her side. After continuous work, the Desais complete the order. However, Kanak, Amrish and Hema steal the gowns. Anant and Gehna realise that they were stolen by Kanak and Hema. Just as Gehna goes to confront them, the police arrive at the Desai house with Amrish and arrest Gehna for not agreeing to the contract laws for the advertisement and to the Desais' surprise. Kanak rejoices at the scene but her happiness is short lived as Anant sets Gehna free from jail and the two of them expose Kanak's deeds. Pankaj expels her from the Desai Mansion due to which Jigna vows to destroy the Desais and Gehna for ruining Kanak's relationship with Pankaj while Hema too constantly plots against Gehna.

Gehna's childhood friend, Krishna visits Gehna and starts living with the Desais, which eventually irks Anant who unknowingly starts loving Gehna. Kanak pretentiously apologises to the family and pretends to have changed while she secretly plots revenge on Gehna and the Desais with Jigna. Eventually, Sagar regains his lost memory and begins plotting with Kanak once again. However, he still acts like a child around the family. He pretends to want to marry Tia with the intention of selling her but Suman, his first wife and to be mother of his child marries him instead. Sagar's act is exposed and he is sent to jail.

To surpise Anant on their wedding anniversary, Gehna decides to learn how to drive, only telling Kanak. Kanak and Hema make Gehna believe she has hit Hema with her car but Gehna soon learns the truth and exposes Hema's act. She gives Kanak one more warning. Soon, Kanak executes her biggest plan on taking revenge from the Desais. She gets herself kidnapped and pays the goons to frighten the Desais using Kanak, asking the Desais for ten-crores to free her. With no bank and scared, the Desais decide sign their property papers in the goons' names, not knowing that everything is actually a plan by Kanak, who wants to claim ownership of the house and oust the Desais. The Desais sign the papers and are soon shocked to realise the truth about Kanak's cunning plan. However, it is too late and Kanak ousts the Desais. Later, the Desais blame Gehna for the same, holding her responsible. Kanak treats the Desais as servants and along with her mother, they ill-treat all of them. Later, Anant and Gehna disguise as builders, Mr. and Mrs. Irani to claim their property back. They reach Desai House and meet Kanak. After ups and downs, Anant and Gehna succeed and reclaim the property, shocking Kanak. Later, they oust Kanak from the house and Pankaj tells the former to sign divorce papers.

The Desais keep a party to celebrate their victory over evil. However their happiness is once again jinxed when Kanak makes a comeback and accuses the Desais in front of women-empowerment oorganisations, claiming that the family is ill-treating her. Gehna later explains to the women about Kanak's actual deeds and later, the women call upon the manager of the organisation. The Desais are shocked to realise that the manager is none other than Radhika, Anant's ex-girlfriend. Radhika tells the Desais that she is now in an NGO that sorts out relationships in homes and that she will be staying at the Desai House, shocking Anant and Gehna. However, she has come in with a bad motive of framing the Desais of domestic violence. She uses Kanak as a pawn for this and keeps hurting Kanak, blaming it on the Desais in front of the eyes of law. Kanak initially too plays along but later realizes that Radhika is using her.

Production

Development

In July 2020, Devoleena Bhattacharjee signed the contract for the new season with the production under plans since a year before. Admist this, the rap by Yashraj Mukhate released on 21 August 2020 went viral and the re-run of the series Saath Nibhaana Saathiya during the Coronavirus lockdown was garnering good ratings which made the makers to immediately start production of the new season of the series and released the first promo on 31 August 2020 featuring Bhattacharjee reprising her role of Gopi Modi while the casting was not even started.

Saathiya has been a talking point since its launch in 2010. Even after it ended, it remained on top of my mind and we came up with some ideas on how we could take it forward. During the lockdown, its reruns were widely watched and that made us believe this is a good time to bring it back with a new season. Its recall value is still very strong. There will be many new characters and a twist in the storyline, but it will remain a family show and be driven by relationships. We were working on a new storyline when his video came out and went viral, assuring us that we are on the right path.

Reboot series

Main article: Tera Mera Saath Rahe

On 26 May 2021, Shoonya Square Productions announced that they will be producing a reboot version of Saathiya on Star Plus's Sister channel Star Bharat with similar cast figures like Giaa Manek, Mohammad Nazim, Rupal Patel and Vandana Vithlani reprising their roles. Along with these actors, they will be several new characters with a different storyline but the same concept of a Gujarati joint family. In early July 2021 the title was finalized as Tera Mera Saath Rahe. The reboot version started broadcasting from 16 August 2021.

Filming

Based on the backdrop of Surat, in Gujarat, the series is completely filmed at the Ramdev Studio in Naigaon.

On 14 April 2021, shooting halted due to COVID-19 precautions set by Uddhav Thackeray, the chief minister of Maharashtra. On 18 and 19 April, the entire team of Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2 shifted their base to Agra and continued shooting there till early June.

Release

The first promo of the series was released on 31 August 2020 featuring Bhattacharjee reprising her role of Gopi from the former season. In the next promo released on 1 October 2020, Bhattacharjee playing Gopi introduced Sneha Jain and Harsh Nagar as the lead characters, Gehna and Anant. In the next promo released on 14 October 2020, Rupal Patel was shown reprising her role as Kokila Modi. The series premiered on 19 October 2020 at 9.00 pm time slot on StarPlus.

Concept

The main plot of the series is taken from Star Jalsha's Bengali series Ke Apon Ke Por, even though some parts of the story are removed from the plot of Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2. The extension of the first season's story is shown as the sub plot in this season merged with the main story, featuring Devoleena Bhattacharjee, Mohammad Nazim, Rupal Patel, Swati Shah, Vandana Vithlani and Manish Arora from the former series, only during the initial 30 episodes of the series.

Casting

With the release of first promo, Devoleena Bhattacharjee, Rupal Patel and Mohammad Nazim were confirmed reprising their roles of Gopi, Kokila and Ahem Modi/Jaggi Modi (double role). Vishal Singh confirmed being approached for reprising their role of Jigar Modi, but finally declined it. Rucha Hasabnis declined to reprise her role as Rashi Modi in the new season, as her character had died in the former season and that she did not wish to perform a role in a typical family drama.

On 13 September 2020, Sneha Jain and Harsh Nagar were confirmed to reprise their lead roles as Gehna and Anant. Soon, with the first look of the series, Vandana Vittlanee, Swati Shah and Manish Arora were confirmed reprising their roles of Urmila Shah, Hetal Modi and Parag Modi from the former season. Besides the former season's cast and the leads, Jay Pathak, Akanksha Juneja, Nadia Himani, Prakash Vaghela, Aliraza Namdar and Anuradha Kanabar were cast to perform the recurring roles of the show.

Soon, it was revealed that the cast from the first season were only shooting for a few episodes in order to introduce the new leads of the show and in mid-November 2020, the entire cast of the former season quit the series also because of the promoter's demand on having only one track and that the show completely focused on the original show, Ke Apon Ke Por.

In June 2021, lead actress, Akanksha Juneja took a break from the sets. During her absence, the show focused on Hema Desai aka Nadia Himani. The show also changed the storyline slightly due to Juneja's absence and introduced a new character, Krishna, played by Sanket Chouske.

Reception

Critics

The Times of India reviewed, "Ahem's mysterious presence in Gopi's life, Kokila's sass and injustice towards Gehna will keep you hooked." India Today criticized the launch of the new season as unnecessary and on the other hand criticizing the former season saying, "During the course of seven years, the show took three major leaps – eight years, 10 years and four years.
