Electric Loco Shed, Gomoh is a motive power depot performing locomotive maintenance and repair facility for electric locomotives of the Indian Railways, located at Gomoh of the East Central Railway zone in Jharkhand, India. It is one of the three electric loco sheds in the ECR the others being at Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar (DDU) and Barauni (BJU).
History
After Eastern Railway (now under East Central Railways) set a deadline to eliminate all steam locomotive operations by 1990, a push was given towards establishing electric locomotion as the primary motive power, and the Steam locomotive sheds were decommissioned.[1] To meet the needs of exponentially increasing rail traffic on the new continuous broad gauge lines from Jharkhand and Bihar to rest of India with the completion of gauge conversion, the Gomoh was selected by Indian railways for a new electric locomotive shed.[2] In 1965 the Shed was inaugurated with holding of 50 locos. Initially the holding kept on increasing and now it has a sanctioned capacity of 120 locos. It is the first electric loco Shed in India to hold WAG-9 and WAP-7 locomotives. It formerly holded WAG-7 locos but now transferred to other sheds.
Operations
Being one of the three electric engine sheds in East Central Railway, various major and minor maintenance schedules of electric locomotives are carried out here. It has the sanctioned capacity of 120 engine units. Beyond the operating capacity, this shed houses a total of 173 engine units, including 132 WAG-9 and 41 WAP-7.
