It is now rated as one of the premier loco sheds in Indian Railways. It is one of the three Diesel Loco Sheds in the Northeast Frontier Railway zone followed by New Guwahati and Siliguri. It was originally a steam loco shed but with the introduction of the Diesel traction the shed was also converted into a diesel Loco Shed and became the first Broad Gauge diesel Loco Shed in Northeast Frontier Railway. Like all the other locomotives sheds, MLDT does regular maintenance of Diesel Locomotives including washing and painting of the locomotives.
