Udaan (transl. Flight) is an Indian social drama television series that aired on Colors TV from 18 August 2014 to 28 June 2019.[5][6] From 2014 to 2016, the show starred child actor Spandan Chaturvedi who played young Chakor.[7] It then took a generation leap and from 2016 to 2019, the show revolved around Chakor, Suraj, Imli and Vivaan played by Meera Deosthale, Vijayendra Kumeria, Vidhi Pandya and Paras Arora.[8][9] In 2019, the show took another leap and focused on Chakor's daughter, Saanvi and Sameer played by Tanya Sharma and Gaurav Sareen. Is is currently the fourth most longest-running Indian television series aired on Colors TV.[10] Udaan highlighted the issue of bonded labour in Indian villages.[11][12]

Plot[edit]

Prelude[edit]

Set in 1996 in Azadganj village, wealthy landlord Kamal Narayan uses the villagers as bonded labourers. Couple Bhuvan Lal Singh and Kasturi face financial difficulty; as collateral for a loan, they agree to let Kamal use their first child as a servant when she becomes seven years old. However, Kasturi gives birth to a girl Chakor.

7 years later[edit]

Chakor who is an aspiring marathon runner is 7 years old, and has a younger sister Imli. She goes to Kamal's mansion to serve and befriends his nephew Vivaan. She speaks for the villagers' rights against the landlord. In real, Chakor has a twin sister Chunni who was secretly raised in Mumbai.

Kamal kills her. Chakor seeks revenge. Her marathon coach Arjun elopes with Kamal's daughter Bhagya. Chakor escapes with them to pursue her dreams and vows to return to the village in 10 years. Vengeful for the betrayal, Kamal gets Chakor's grandmother buried alive.

10 years later[edit]

Chakor is a famous marathon runner by the tage 501 and returns. Imli hates her for leaving them all behind. Vivaan holds a grudge. Kamal's son Suraj treats all the villagers very badly. Chakor learns about her grandmother's death and gets Kamal arrested, though he is later bailed.

Vivaan is angry when his widowed mother Ranjana marries Kamal. He cuts all his ties with her after knowing she killed her husband Manohar (Kamal's brother and Vivaan's father). He rebuilds his bond with Chakor; they fall in love.

Imli falls in love with Suraj whose marriage is arranged to marathon runner Tina Raichand. A double ceremony is planned for Tina and Suraj along with Vivaan and Chakor. Imli is pregnant with Suraj's child and explains to Tina who conspires to switch places at the marriage ceremony.

However, Suraj learns about this and shows his cruelty by switching them making Imli married to Vivaan while Chakor marries Suraj. Chakor is initially blamed, and Suraj mistreats her. Love blossoms between Vivaan and Imli. Suraj while falls for Imli.

Kamal's evil daughter Ragini enters. Imli and Vivaan go on a candlelight dinner where she trips on a stone and suffers a miscarriage. Suraj releases Chakor from their marriage. Imli wants Vivaan. Kamal returns to Azadganj to avenge what Suraj did to him.

Chakor realizing that Suraj's life is in danger becomes his shield. Suraj is forced to be a labourer (bandhua) by Kamal. Chakor helps keeping his hope alive that one day all the miseries will end. Suraj has a change of heart when Chakor helps him.

Suraj and Chakor fall madly in love with each other. On their first anniversary they propose each other. Imli tells Vivaan that she is pregnant; he is shocked as his doctor told him that he cannot become a dad. He suspects Imli is carrying Suraj's child.

When everyone blames Imli, Suraj comes forth and lies that Imli is carrying his child. Heartbroken, Chakor divorces Suraj but truth soon comes out that Ragini was the real culprit behind all this. Imli forgives Vivaan. Suraj remarries Chakor and they consummate their marriage.

Imli conceals a miscarriage from Vivaan, causing a rift when he learns the truth. She gives him sleeping injection and he falls into a coma. Imli suspects Chakor of betraying her and conspires with Kamal to have her stabbed and thrown into a river. Chakor is threw and presumed dead.

1 month later[edit]

Chakor is saved from river by a priest at Varansi and recovers. She is pregnant. Imli creates misunderstandings between Chakor and Suraj, by telling untrue things. Chakor is sheltered by ACP Ranvijay Singh, and later reunites with Suraj after clearing all misunderstandings.

Kamal killed Ranvijay's father in past. Vengeful, Ranvijay kidnaps Suraj. He is arrested. Kamal kills Ranjana by throwing her down for revenge of his brother Manohar’s death. Chakor and Suraj return to Azadganj, forgiving Imli who tells she lied to save them from Kamal; they're unaware of her truth. Kamal kidnaps Chakor who miscarries and loses her child.

Chakor kills Kamal to avenge all deaths, freeing villagers from debt, and is jailed for 5 years. Imli bails Ranvijay in Varanasi, and brings him to Azadganj. They hit an ironic stick at Suraj's head as a part of their conspiracy, leading him to lose his memory. Imli marries Ranvijay.

5 years later[edit]

Released from jail, Chakor is shocked after learning Imli's truth and how she mistreats villagers. Amnesiac, Suraj who refuses to recognize Chakor is Imli's servant. She has kept Suraj's mother Tejaswini locked in a secret room.

Eventually, Suraj regains his memories and reunites with Chakor. They free Tejaswini. Imli shoots Ranvijay in anger and escapes. Everyone believes that Ranvijay has died. Imli tries to injure Chakor but indeed meets with an accident and is presumed dead. Azadganj is freed again.

2 years later[edit]

Chakor and Suraj have a baby daughter, Saanvi. Imli is alive and returns but is arrested when Vivaan awakens from his coma. She is later released. Her gun dealer Yashwant tries to kill Suraj; when Vivaan gets in the way, Chakor accidentally shoots him to death.

Imli swears revenge for Vivaan's death. She kidnaps Saanvi and fakes her death. Suraj blames Chakor and severs ties with her. She leaves the village along with Kasturi and Bhuvan. Imli makes Saanvi a labourer. Suraj moves to New York with Yashwant's daughter Naina.

7 years later[edit]

Saanvi is raised as Anjor by labourer couple Sugna and Kesho. Chakor returns to village for work and rescues Saanvi from goons; the two form a bond, unaware of their relation. Suraj returns from New York for business purposes and also forms a bond with Saanvi.

Chakor learns Saanvi is alive. Imli finally reveals to her that Anjor is none other than Saanvi. Suraj gets to know that Imli was the one who kept Saanvi away from them, and is sorry to Chakor. The family is reunited and Imli is arrested, with Saanvi aware about her real parentage.

1 year later[edit]

Chakor and Suraj live happily with Saanvi. Children disappear from the village, and it is revealed that politician Rajeshwari Singh and her son Vikram have been poisoning their injections. Chakor and Suraj banish them, but Vikram sets a bomb that kills Suraj.

Chakor is devastated but, rather than telling Saanvi, pays Suraj's look-alike Raghav Khanna to take his place. The family of Tejaswini's brother comes to live at the mansion after his death. Her son-in-law Akash is Vikram's vengeful brother. Imli is back from jail.

Raghav falls for Chakor who realizes Akash's truth. Imli turns good and dies while saving Raghav from a villain. Saanvi realises Raghav isn't Suraj. Chakor is jailed for 10 years due to false blame. Saanvi is adopted by rich couple Jatin and Poonam after Rajvanshis are killed by villagers.

10 years later[edit]

Chakor is released from jail and shifts to Mumbai to find Saanvi who is grown up and hates her. Saanvi is now known as Angie. Chakor meets her and gets to know she is Saanvi. To get close with her, Chakor works at Jatin and Poonam's house where Saanvi lives.

Saanvi falls in love with Sameer Sharma. Raghav comes back and meets Chakor. Eventually, Saanvi begins to accept her. Poonam tries to separate them. Raghav dies due to an accident planned by Poonam. Soon, Saanvi learns about Poonam's evil deeds and unites with Chakor.

Saanvi marries Sameer and they move to Sitapur. But, he is brutally killed by the alive Ranvijay who rules Sitapur now. Chakor and Saanvi unite to get revenge. Together, they unmask Ranvijay's real face to people.
