Sumbul Touqeer (born 15 November 2003) is an Indian television and film actress. She gained recognition for her lead role of Imlie, a young and smart village belle, in StarPlus's TV series Imlie in 2020.[1]

Sumbul made her silver screen debut with Anubhav Sinha's Hindi film Article 15 (film) where she played the role of Amali, although it was a small role, but she impressed everyone with her acting skills.[2]

Early life[edit | edit source]

Sumbul Touqeer was born on 15 November 2003 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh[3][4] and brought up in her hometown Katni, Madhya Pradesh where she spent the initial 6 years of her life. When Sumbul's age was 6, her parents were separated. Sumbul and her younger sister Saniya, who is also a television actress, were both raised by their father as a single parent.[5]

Her father Touqeer Hasan Khan brought Sumbul and Saniya to Delhi where they spent 5–6 years. Sumbul's father was a dance choreographer in Delhi, while Sumbul and Saniya used to perform in their father's choreographed Krishna and Ram Leela plays, which sparked their interest in dance, which later transformed into acting.[6][7]

Sumbul's father noticed that both his daughters had a keen interest in dance and were talented as well, so he decided that he would shift to Mumbai with the family. He packed his bags overnight and shifted from Delhi to Mumbai so that Sumbul and Saniya could try their luck in the entertainment industry.[5]

Sumbul completed her High School from the NTCC High School in Malad West, Mumbai and 12th standard from a private school. After that she started studying commerce, but decided to stop it as soon as she realized that she was interested in cinematography. She would apply for a cinematography course in the near future.[8]

She did her training in acting at the Sehejmoodra Acting Academy, run by Monika Verma.[9] Dancing and acting were interchangeably Sumbul’s favorite hobbies. In school, Sumbul and Saniya would passionately take part in plays premised around Krishna and Ram Leela.

Career[edit | edit source]

Sumbul started her career as a dancer at a very young age by participating in Dance reality shows such as India's Dancing Superstars, aired on StarPlus in 2013 and Hindustan Ka Big Star, aired on Big Magic in 2014.[10] She started her acting career with small roles in Har Mushkil Ka Hal Akbar Birbal and Jodha Akbar in 2014 as a child actor which aired on Big Magic and Zee TV respectively.[11][12]

During 2014-16 she played child actor in TV series like Aahat, Gangaa, Baalveer, Mann Mein Vishwaas Hai. During 2016-2019, She appeared in TV series like Waaris, Chakradhari Ajay Krishna, Chandragupta Maurya, Ishaaron Ishaaron Mein.[13][14][15]

In 2020, she starred in the popular Hindi TV show Imlie that aired on StarPlus, where she played the lead character of Imlie, a young and smart village belle, opposite Gashmeer Mahajani, Fahmaan Khan and Mayuri Deshmukh.[16][17][1]

Before Imlie, Sumbul made her Bollywood debut with Article 15 (film) in 2019 where she played the role of Amali, although it was a small role, but she impressed everyone with her acting skills.[2][18][19] In the same year she appeared in Vaaste Music Video playing the role of lead's friend.[20]

In 2022, she participated in the Game show Ravivaar With Star Parivaar as a StarPlus's show Imlie contestant.[21][22] In the same year she appeared in Ishq Ho Gaya Music Video with Fahmaan Khan, her co-star from the Imlie TV series.

In addition to her acting career, Sumbul also participated in the well-known reality show Bigg Boss (Hindi season 16) in 2022 and became the youngest contestant in the history of Bigg Boss (in any language) to stay in the house for more than 100 days.[23][24][25]

In 2023, she participated in the Game show Entertainment Ki Raat Housefull which aired on Colors TV.[26] In the same year she appeared in Sazishen Music Video with Sumedh Mudgalkar.

In 2023, she made a comeback on the television with a TV show Kavya – Ek Jazbaa, Ek Junoon that is currently aired on Sony Entertainment Television where she is playing the lead character of IAS Kavya Bansal, opposite Mishkat Varma and Anuj Sullere.[27][28][29]
