Navra Maza Navsacha (translation: My Husband Is Born From A Divine Vow) is a 2004 Indian Marathi-language slapstick road comedy film directed and produced by Sachin Pilgaonkar under the production banner of Kittu Films. Released in Maharashtra in November 2004, the film stars an ensemble cast of Sachin Pilgaonkar, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Ashok Saraf, Sunil Tawde, Pradeep Patwardhan, Jaywant Wadkar, Vijay Patkar, Nirmiti Sawant, Kishori Shahane and Atul Parchure. The film follows a childless couple travelling from Mumbai to Ganapatipule through a state transport bus to complete an unfulfilled vow. [1] [2] Sachin Pilgaonkar remade the film in Kannada in 2007 as Ekadantha. The plot of the film is based on Bombay to Goa (1972), which itself was a remake of Tamil film Madras to Pondicherry (1966).[3]
Plot[edit]
Vakratund (Sachin Pilgaonkar), also known as Vacky, and Bhakti (Supriya Pilgaonkar) are a couple having got married against Bhakti's parents' wishes. Vacky is a talented artist, but has not achieved commercial success, while the couple is also still childless despite 10 years of marriage. Bhakti learns from Vacky's paternal aunt, Atya (Nirmiti Sawant), that after the loss of their three newborn children, Vacky's late parents had made a vow to Lord Ganesha that they will bring their child "unclothed" to the temple of Ganapatipule if it is born healthy. However, the vow was left unfulfilled as Vacky's parents died early out of ecstacy of finally being blessed with a healthy son. Shocked at learning this, Bhakti persuades Vacky to fulfill the vow in an attempt to change their dissatisfying life, but he strongly refuses to agree with her request due to the task being next to impossible. In order to overcome Bhakti's insistence, Vacky and his close friend, Kishore (Atul Parchure), hire a small-time television actor (Satish Tare) to act as a powerful astrologer named "Ughade Baba" in front of Bhakti. The actor instructs Bhakti to take a mannequin resembling Vacky unclothed to the temple of Ganapatipule via state transport bus to fulfill the vow and enable themselves to enter parenthood. On the previous night of Vacky and Bhakti's travel to Ganapatipule, Vacky and Kishore succeed in sneaking such a mannequin under the backseat of the bus bound for Ganapatipule at the bus depot. However, they are unaware that after their departure from the bus that night, an unseen international smuggler, Babu Kaalia, who has just escaped from prison and stolen diamonds worth ₹80 crore from the Government of India, had secretly entered the bus and hidden a bag full of the diamonds in a hollow of the same mannequin.
The remaining plot of the film focuses on hilarious situations and the highs and lows that Vacky and Bhakti face while travelling to Ganapatipule through the bus. The bus journey is adventurous with the passengers, a totally mixed bunch, from all over Maharashtra, different lives, personalities, cultures and traditions, are all thrown together for this journey. The bus is in the "control" of the bus conductor, Lalu (Ashok Saraf), and the bus driver, Prasad (Sunil Tawde). En route to Ganapatipule, Lalu meets a lavani dancer, Shevanta (Kishori Shahane), during a technical problem regarding the bus and falls in love with her after she helps him save his job. After the resumption of the journey, however, Lalu is horrified to accidentally see the mannequin under the backseat and creates havoc while believing it to be a dead body. Despite this, Vacky and Bhakti manage to convince Lalu, Prasad and the bus passengers that it is a mannequin and its significance for being secretly taken from the bus to Ganapatipule. Nevertheless, on finally reaching Ganapatipule, the group is shocked to be confronted by the police, who have an evidence that Babu Kaalia is travelling from the bus in disguise, in order to escape to Dubai along with his gang from the port of Ganapatipule with the diamonds stolen by him. At the same time, a mute passenger (Vijay Patkar) in the bus is revealed to be actually faking his speech impairment for being an undercover inspector sent by the Mumbai police to identify Babu Kaalia.
Throughout the journey, Vacky, just for entertainment sake, has been coincidentally sketching a portrait of Babu Kaalia with the help of another bus passenger (Jaywant Wadkar) having encountered Babu Kaalia earlier. As soon as Vacky completes the portrait, Babu Kaalia (Pradeep Patwardhan) reveals his true identity and holds the entire bus and the police at gunpoint, threatening for the mannequin wherein the diamonds stolen by him are hidden. At this point, Vacky confesses to Bhakti that the "Ughade Baba" whom she had met earlier was fake and that he had planned the drama with Kishore in order to avoid fulfilling the bizarre vow. However, Bhakti requests Vacky to take the mannequin to the temple out of her faith and devotion towards their union and Lord Ganesha. Thus, Vacky escapes from the bus with the mannequin and runs towards the temple while being pursued by the gang of Babu Kaalia, the police and the bus passengers. During the attempt, all the clothes of Vacky are torn off by the pursuers, and is only left in his underwear by the time he reaches the temple with the mannequin and locks himself inside. Inside the temple, Vacky's underwear also tears off after being entangled with the door bolt, and feels delighted on realising that Lord Ganesha himself has indeed fulfilled the vow, by making him appear unclothed in front of Him. While the police arrest Babu Kaalia and his gang for their crimes, Vacky exits the temple in the clothes of the priest, and returns the diamonds in the mannequin that were stolen by Babu Kaalia to the police. In the end, Vacky and Bhakti are rewarded by the police with ₹8 crore, the 10% amount of ₹80 crore as per the government law, for capturing Babu Kaalia, and decide to make a vow to bring their child "clothed" to the temple of Ganapatipule.
