Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri (born 2 March 1974), is an Indian Twelver Shia Islamic cleric, religious scholar, preacher, and community leader.[1][2] He is serving as the Imam-e-Jumma wal Jamaat of Haidery Jama Masjid, Mira Road, Mumbai, since 2003.[1][2][3][4][5][6] He is also associated with various religious, educational, and social organizations and is involved in preaching, teaching, and community leadership.[5][7][8][9][10][11]

Early life and family[edit source]

Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri was born on 2 March 1974 in Jangipur, Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh, India.[2] He belongs Khandaan e Ustaad (a family traditionally associated with religious scholarship)[2]

Religious education[edit source]

He undertook formal Islamic studies in India and Iran. He studied at Jamia Imania Nasiriya, Jaunpur, for approximately five years, followed by advanced religious education in Qom Seminary, Iran.[2][12][13] where he studied for around ten years. He completed the traditional Aalim, Adeeb, and Kaamil examinations conducted by the Aligarh Muslim University Board,[13] reflecting proficiency in Islamic sciences, Arabic literature, and religious scholarship.

During his studies in Qom, he was associated with prominent Shia scholars, including Hossein Wahid Khorasani, Naser Makarim Shirazi, Kamal al Haydari[2]

In 2003, he was appointed as the Imam-e-Jumma wal Jamaat of Haidery Jama Masjid, Mira Road, Mumbai, a position he continues to hold.[1][2][5][6][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][11]

Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri is active as a religious orator and preacher. He delivers sermons and lectures at Friday congregations, religious gatherings (majalis), and conferences.[7][8][9][10][14][15][16][17][19][11]

Protests[edit source]

Maulana Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri has been associated with multiple protests and public demonstrations addressing religious, social, and humanitarian issues.

In 2017, he Lead protests related to statements by journalist Rohit Sardana[20][21] and Protested for advocating for the rebuilding of Jannat al-Baqi, a historic cemetery in Medina of religious significance to Muslims.[22]

In 2021, he headed in protests against Waseem Rizvi, who had filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India seeking the removal of certain verses (Ayats) from the Quran.[23]

In 2022, Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri was the central figure in the hijab protest at Mira Road, advocating for religious freedom and the right to practice faith without discrimination, while emphasizing peaceful demonstration and communal harmony.[24][25]

In 2023 and 2024, Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri was the main figure in the Quds Day protests, highlighting humanitarian concerns in Palestine and Protested for advocating for the rebuilding of Jannat al-Baqi.[26][27]

Following the 2025 Pahalgam attack, Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri publicly condemned the incident and participated in protests denouncing violence and the loss of civilian life.[28][29]

Personal life[edit source]

Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri married Zakira Nishat Fatima Rizvi on 18 August 2005. He has two sons- Syed Raza Imam Zangipuri, Syed Jawad Imam Zangipuri
