Grand Ayatollah Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri (born 2 March 1974[1]) is one of the leading Indian Ayatollah, Shia cleric and Religious Leader. he is prominent and influential religious leader and is regarded as one of the leading figures in India's Muslim Community.[2][3] He is the Supreme Religious Authority of Mira Road, Northern Mumbai and Western Suburbs (Mumbai) also regarded as the Chief of Shia Population and has served as the Imam e Jumma of Haidery Jama Masjid in Mira Road, Mumbai for more than 2 decades.[4][5][6]

Religious career[edit | edit source]

Hasan Imam has been associated with Haidery Jama Masjid in Mira Road, where Inquilab has identified him as the Spokesperson and Imam.[4] He has delivered religious addresses and participated in Shia religious and community programmes in Mira Road and elsewhere.

In March 2025, Inquilab reported a Quds Day programme at Haidery Jama Masjid and identified Hasan Imam as its Orator and Imam. The newspaper reported remarks made by him concerning Quds Day, Palestine and Muslim unity.[7]

In December 2025, Inquilab reported a Seerat-un-Nabi and Ittehad-ul-Ummah conference in Mira Road at which Hasan Imam, again identified as the Orator and Imam of Haidery Jama Masjid, delivered an address concerning the role of individuals in strengthening the family system.[8]

A 2021 report by Hamari Aawaz also identified him as the Orator and Imam of the Shia Haidery Jama Masjid and reported remarks made by him at a social-reform meeting in Mira Road.[9]

Public activities[edit | edit source]

Hasan Imam has participated in religious lectures, community meetings and public demonstrations. Archival recordings identify him in connection with events concerning Jannatul Baqi, Yaum-e-Quds, the hijab controversy and the Waseem Rizvi controversy.[10][11][12] His public activities have also received coverage from outlets including Hawzah News and IQNA's Isfahan and Khorasan services[13][14][15]

In 2021, Inquilab reported Hasan Imam's response to the controversy surrounding Waseem Rizvi's proposed Quran-related actions. The newspaper quoted him in his capacity as the Orator and Imam of Haidery Jama Masjid.[4] Zangipuri publicly responded to the controversy surrounding Waseem Rizvi's proposed actions concerning the Quran, according to The Inquilab.[16] Hawzah News further reported that "Maulana Hasan Imam and other clerics issued a video statement calling Waseem Rizvi and his associates apostates and appealing for a social boycott".[17]

A separate Inquilab report concerning a March 2022 meeting on the hijab lists Maulana Hasan Imam among the religious figures attending the programme.[18]

2017 controversy[edit | edit source]

In 2017, Hasan Imam was associated with a protest in Mira Road concerning journalist Rohit Sardana. Archival video records identify him in connection with a protest rally and a visit by members of the Shia community to the Naya Nagar Police Station.[19][20]

A later report by Veritas International Express described him as a senior Shia cleric and Chief of Shias of Mira Road and reported that he led members of the Shia community to Naya Nagar Police Station in connection with a complaint against Sardana.[21]

Contemporary reporting by The Times of India independently documented a police complaint in Mira Road concerning Sardana's remarks.[22]

Haidery Jama Masjid[edit | edit source]

Haidery Jama Masjid in Mira Road has been described by The Times of India as a major Shia mosque serving Mumbai's western suburbs. The newspaper reported on its religious activities, community welfare programmes and educational assistance for children from poorer families.[23]

Hasan Imam's association with the mosque is independently documented in Inquilab, which repeatedly identifies him as its Spokesperson and Imam.[4][7][8]

Other Names[edit | edit source]

Sources have used several forms of Hasan Imam's name. These include Maulana Syed Hasan Imam, Maulana Hasan Imam, Maulana Hasan Imam Rizvi and Maulana Hasan Imam Zangipuri.[4][7][21] Archival material also uses the longer form Maulana Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri and Allamah Syed Hasan Imam Rizvi Zangipuri.[24]
