The Signpost Newsroom Quick Start guide provides contributor guidelines for writing, reporting, and publishing articles in The Signpost, Bharatpedia's community newspaper.

Overview[edit source]

The Signpost is written and managed by volunteer editors. Anyone in the community is welcome to pitch story ideas, write news reports, cover wiki statistics, write opinion pieces, or review site-wide changes.

Regular Sections[edit source]

When submitting a story, you can write for one of the following standard desks:

  • News and Notes: Site-wide announcements, policy updates, software changes, and community events.
  • In the Media: External media coverage mentioning Bharatpedia or open-knowledge topics.
  • WikiProject Report: Spotlights on active WikiProjects, interviews, and collaboration highlights.
  • Technology: Updates on MediaWiki extensions, technical maintenance, and bot developments.
  • Opinion / Essay: Thoughtful pieces regarding wiki editing, neutrality, or online community culture.

How to Submit an Article[edit source]

  1. Draft Your Article: Create a sandbox draft or subpage under the Newsroom (e.g., Bharatpedia:Signpost/Newsroom/Drafts/YourTitle).
  2. Follow Style Guidelines: Maintain an engaging, neutral, and clear tone. Always cite references or link directly to the relevant talk pages and diffs.
  3. Submit for Review: Post a link to your draft on the Signpost Talk Page for editorial feedback.
  4. Publication: Once reviewed, newsroom coordinators will schedule your piece for the next upcoming issue.

Writing Guidelines[edit source]

  • Neutral & Respectful: Follow civility and NPOV standards. Avoid personal attacks or target editing disputes.
  • Fact-Checked: Ensure all claims, statistics, and diff links are verified before submitting.
  • Clear Wikicode: Use standard Wikitext formatting without overly complex inline styles.
