Baleshwari Odia (Odia: ବାଲେଶ୍ୱରୀ ଓଡ଼ିଆ), also Northern Odia[1] or North Balasore Odia, is a dialect of Odia[2] spoken in the Mayurbhanj (commonly called "Mayurbhanjia"), Balasore, and Bhadrak districts of the Indian state of Odisha. It is a linguistic variations to the standard Odia.[3] While the dialects spoken in these three districts vary with regional influences and influences from different local Adivasi language groups, the Baleswari Odia from the northern coastal Balasore region has a distinct accent with some similarity with Bengali. The dialect in Bhadrak district and Soro have more similarity with the standard Odia.
Characteristics and Comparison[edit]
Baleswari substitutes "କିସ" (kisa) for a frequently used used word "କଣ" (kaṇa) meaning "what". Most of the syllables which are pronounced as "o" in Standard Odia are pronounced as "u" in Baleswaria such as "ଓଡ଼ିଶା" (Odia pronunciation: [oɽisaː]) is pronounced as "ଉଡ଼ିସା".
The following is a list of major words in Baleshwari:[4]
