Abohar is a municipal corporation in the Fazilka district of the Indian state of Punjab,[2] northeast of Sri Ganganagar and southeast of Fazilka.[3] It is near the India-Pakistan border. Abohar's population is 211645.[4] The city is known for kinnow production and accounts for 60% of the country's produce.[5]

A city full of natural beauty, forests and a great variety of flora and fauna, Abohar is situated in Punjab and offers every visitor an exciting getaway. The city acts as a tourist spot for those who have a keen interest in history, those on a spiritual quest and those who are absolute nature lovers.

Abohar was founded in the 12th century and along with the name of the city, there were a lot of changes that took place. It lies close to the India-Pakistan border and hence has mixed inhabitants of different castes and creed. The locals, nonetheless, live in complete peace and harmony. They are warm, friendly people and are always ready to lend a helping hand.

Things to Do[edit]

Abohar has a Wildlife Sanctuary that is spread across 13 villages and is handled by the Bishnoi community. The thing that sets this sanctuary apart from the various others is the fact that it is an open sanctuary that houses various animals like the Black Buck, Blue Bull and antelopes, and you can see these animals roaming around freely in the villages.

The city has various places of worship like Gurudwaras, temples and shrines of Muslim saints. Some of the famous places that hold religious value include the Shiv Temple, Gurudwara Singh Sabha, Gurudwara Nanaskar Tobha, Nav Durga Vaishno Mandir, Sri Sai Mandir and Gurudwara Bad Tirath Sahib.

Abohar is also known for places that hold historical significance like the Theh of Abohar and the Tombs of the Panj Peers.

Nehru Park is another place where tourists can go and enjoy some time amidst greenery. It is the perfect place to rest and relax after a day of sightseeing.

The city has rickshaws and taxis that are easily available and can help you travel to almost any place in the city. You could either hire them all to yourself or share it with other travelers. There are also buses that run across the lengths and breadth of the city at a great frequency. Buses are the cheapest way of getting around the city. You could also choose to rent a private car to commute across the city in comfort.

Wildlife Sanctuary[edit]

Abohar is home to the Abohar Wildlife Sanctuary, which provides a free-range sanctuary for black bucks. The open sanctuary is spread over an area of 18,650 hectares across farmlands and villages.[6]
