Deep Sidhu (1984 – 15 February 2022) was a Khalistani supporter, barrister, actor, and activist[2] who worked in Punjabi language films. Sidhu started his film career with the Punjabi film Ramta Jogi which was produced by actor Dharmendra under his banner Vijayta Films.[3][4]
Early life
Sidhu was born in 1984 to a Punjabi family in Muktsar, Punjab.[3][5]
Career
Sidhu was lawyer by profession and had worked for director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Vijeyta production House.[3] He practiced law only for a short time.[5]
He became the winner of Kingfisher Model Hunt. After which, he left the bar and law practice and began working in the film industry.[5]
He took part in Grasim Mr. India and became Grasim Mr. Personality and Grasim Mr. Talented. Sidhu has walked ramp in Mumbai for designers like Hemant Trivedi, Rohit Gandhi and others. Somehow he could not connect with Modelling World so he started practising as a lawyer since he has studied law. His first placement was with Sahara India Pariwar as legal advisor.[6] Then he worked with British law firm called Hammonds. They managed Disney, Sony Pictures and other Hollywood Studios. Then he became legal head of Balaji Telefilms for three and half years. That's where Ekta Kapoor told him to act but he didn't start.[7][8]
Politics
Sidhu entered in politics during 2019 Indian general election and campaigned for Gurdaspur BJP MP Sunny Deol. He is said to be close to Deol and in December 2020, during farmers protest, farmer unions used Sidhu's pictures with Prime minister Narendra Modi and Sunny Deol to show the link of BJP and RSS in protests—a claim which was later denied by Sidhu.[5]
The farmer unions blamed Sidhu[9] and gangster-turned-activist Lakha Sidhana[10] for instigating riot and hoisting a religious flag on Red Fort during the 2021 Farmers' Republic Day parade.[11] Sidhu and Sadana were also booked by the police.[12] In a preliminary investigation by the police, it said in a statement "there was a pre-conceived and well-coordinated plan to break the agreement between the Delhi Police and the leaders of protesting organizations."[13][14] Sidhu was arrested on 9 February 2021.[15][16]
Deep was a Khalistani supporter and was arrested in February 2021 after he participated in the desecration of the Red Fort after the tractor rally held by farmers that turned violent. The Khalistani supporters had brutally attacked the security personnel and police officials stationed at Red Fort, they had disrespected India's national flag by hoisting two other flags with Sikh symbols on the Red Fort. In May 2021, a charge sheet was filed against him. His act of desecrating the Red Fort was hailed by the pro-Khalistan groups.[17]
Personal life and death
Sidhu died in a road accident on the Kundli-Manesar highway, near Delhi, on 15 February 2022, at the age of 37. Sidhu was driving his Scorpio car when he hit a parked vehicle on the highway. There were three people in the car; two of them died at the scene, whilst another sustained injuries.[18]
