He belonged to the [[Communist Party of India (Marxist)]] and was a member of the Central Committee of the party from 2002 till death. He was also the President of the [[Students' Federation of India]] West Bengal State Committee from 1973 to 1979 and All India Joint Secretary. He was the Transport Minister of West Bengal from 1982 to 1996.
